Two beloved games originally made for the Sony PSP are receiving new content almost 20 years after their initial release. However, the updates aren’t for the original PSP versions; they’re for the recently re-released versions on Nintendo Switch, PC, and PS5. These re-releases, which normally cost $29.99, are currently discounted for the holidays.
The popular PSP games Patapon and Patapon 2 returned earlier this year as Patapon 1 + 2 Replay, and they’re getting a significant free update on December 22nd. This update will introduce a completely new game mode, though developers SAS and publisher Bandai Namco are keeping the details a secret to maintain an element of surprise. They’ve released a short teaser trailer, which you can watch below, offering a glimpse of what’s to come.
Patapon Fans Are Excited
One popular comment on the trailer said, “I never imagined these games would get new content almost 17 years after they first came out!” Another commenter was surprised to see new Patapon content announced for 2025.
I’m also really curious about what this could mean for the game – what new things could they be planning? But honestly, I’m super hyped either way!
As a big fan, I’m really excited about this new mode, but honestly, I’m not sure when we’ll actually learn about it! We’re down to just a weekend before the update on December 22nd, and announcements rarely happen on weekends. So, I’m guessing we won’t get the details until launch day, which is Monday. It’s a bit surprising to see this new content for Patapon 1 + 2 Replay since it didn’t sell amazingly well, and it didn’t generate a ton of hype. Because of that, and the fact that they’re keeping everything so quiet, some people are wondering if it might be a crossover of some kind, but that’s just a guess – the trailer didn’t hint at anything like that.
If you’re not familiar with the Patapon series, the first game was a unique rhythm game released in 2007 exclusively for the PSP. It was created by the now-closed development teams Pyramid and SIE Japan. A sequel, Patapon 2, came out a year later. While a third game, Patapon 3, was released in 2011, it’s not part of this recent re-release.
