Classic Sci-Fi Anime Getting Reboot After 23 Years (But There’s a Catch)

A beloved science fiction romantic comedy anime from the early 2000s is getting a reboot after 23 years. This era was a high point for both sci-fi and rom-coms in anime, and this series successfully combined the two. If plans come together, fans can look forward to a new installment of Please Teacher! after the original series concluded over two decades ago.

Genco Inc. is creating a new animated series based on the sci-fi classic, Please Teacher!. They’ve launched a crowdfunding campaign in Japan aiming to raise 25 million yen (approximately $160 million USD) by late March of next year. While details are currently limited, this project is described as a reboot of the Please series. It’s a slightly unusual reboot, but fans should stay tuned for more information.

What to Know for New Please Teacher!

The recently announced crowdfunding campaign for the new Please Teacher! animation indicated it’s expected to be finished around March or April, with screenings planned in several Japanese cities. While a Blu-ray version will be released, details about availability outside of Japan haven’t been announced yet. Yasunori Idea, the director of the original Please Teacher! anime and its sequel, Please Twins, is also directing this new animation for Studio M2. Several other people who worked on the previous series are returning for this project as well.

The new animation will feature character designs by Taraku Uon, who also worked on the original anime, and background art by Kusanagi. Emi Yonezawa is producing, and Bandai Namco Filmworks will handle the Blu-ray release. Importantly, the original voice actors are returning, and the team is committed to continuing the project even if they don’t reach their crowdfunding target.

What Is Please Teacher! Anyway?

The early 2000s anime Please Teacher! was a hidden favorite, becoming so popular it inspired a visual novel and manga continuation even after the original series finished. While an official spinoff series followed, the franchise hasn’t seen new content in a long time. The story centers around Mizuho, a mysterious alien sent to Earth on a secret mission, and her encounter with Kei.

Kei is a boy battling a strange illness that leaves him in a coma-like state. When Mizuho joins his school as a new teacher, their lives unexpectedly connect. The series follows the humorous mishaps and misunderstandings that arise from their connection, and a new reboot will finally reveal the story behind it all.
