Classic Shonen Franchise Creates The Most Expensive Collectable

Anime is more popular than ever, so it’s no surprise many series are trying to take advantage of this growing interest. Beyond releasing new shows and movies, they’re also offering more merchandise around the world. Now, a classic anime series, Fist of the North Star, is releasing a particularly unique and extravagant piece of merchandise for dedicated fans who are willing to spend the money.

Starting June 3rd, a life-sized, golden statue of Kenshiro from the anime Fist of the North Star will be displayed at the Matsuzakaya Department Store in Japan. The impressive statue stands 6 feet, 4 inches tall and is part of a larger “Great Gold Exhibition.” It’s priced at 44 million Japanese Yen – over $275,000! For those who can’t afford the full-sized version, a smaller, 4.3-inch golden statue will also be available for over $31,000.

Fist of the North Star’s Anime Reign

First appearing as a manga in 1983 by Buronson, Fist of the North Star quickly became a cornerstone of the anime world. An anime adaptation followed in 1984, running for 109 episodes before a sequel series debuted in 1986. Over the years, the franchise has continued with new anime series and films. While a live-action Western adaptation was made in 1995, it’s widely considered much lower in quality than recent hits like Netflix’s One Piece. This year, Toei revisited the series, creating a new remake of the original using modern CG animation to showcase Kenshiro’s intense story.

The first season of the Fist of the North Star remake will conclude with its twelfth episode, but the original series was much longer. The show is set in a post-apocalyptic future, similar to Mad Max, where powerful warlords and gangs control a desolate world. The protagonist, Kenshiro, is a martial artist who can defeat enemies with precise strikes, making for a very violent and action-packed anime.
