Anthropic, in a move as subtle as a troll under a bridge, has decided to slam the door on Claude’s most devoted fans. Starting April 5 at high noon (PT), third-party AI agent tools like OpenClaw will be shown the exit, faster than a wizard losing his hat in a storm.
Thousands of developers, who’d built workflows as intricate as a dwarf’s minecart system, are now left holding their flat-rate plans like a ticket to a cancelled circus. Pay up for API tokens or pack your bags for greener models-the choice is as clear as a Lancre morning.
Why Did Anthropic Pull the Plug on OpenClaw?
Boris Cherny, the Head of Claude Code (a title that sounds like it belongs in a wizard’s guild), announced the restriction with all the charm of a tax collector. Apparently, subscriptions were never meant for the kind of token-guzzling that OpenClaw’s agentic loops indulge in. Who knew debugging could be as expensive as a night at the Opera House?
“Capacity is a resource we manage thoughtfully, and we are prioritizing our customers using our products and API,” he said, presumably while adjusting his monocle.
The economic mismatch had been brewing longer than a witch’s potion. A single debugging session could burn through tokens like a dragon through a treasure hoard, turning $200 subscriptions into a financial black hole for Anthropic.
To soften the blow, Anthropic tossed subscribers a one-time credit, discounted usage bundles, and refunds for those who’d rather jump ship. How generous-almost as if they’re throwing coins to a beggar.
Starting tomorrow at 12pm PT, Claude subscriptions will no longer cover usage on third-party tools like OpenClaw.
You can still use these tools with your Claude login via extra usage bundles (now available at a discount), or with a Claude API key.

The backlash was quicker than a wizard’s spell. Subscriptions were canceled faster than a bad pub’s ale runs out. The general sentiment? Anthropic’s move is as wise as a troll’s philosophy-an admission they can’t keep up with open-source agents.
“No thanks. Subscription canceled. New models have already been configured,” wrote one user, probably while sipping tea and smirking.
Developer Alex Finn, never one to mince words, called it a “massive mistake” and predicted local models would outshine Opus 4.6 within six months. He even outlined a hybrid setup using Claude Opus as orchestrator with Gemma 4 and Qwen 3.5 for execution, costing roughly $200 monthly. Because why rely on one wizard when you can have a whole council?
Microsoft 365 and Claude Cowork to the Rescue
The timing, as they say, is as suspicious as a cat in a room full of cream. Anthropic is expanding its Microsoft 365 connector to all Claude plans, including Free. Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams are now Claude’s new best friends, positioning it squarely against Microsoft Copilot’s $30-per-user monthly pricing. A classic case of “if you can’t beat ’em, integrate with ’em.”
Microsoft 365 connectors are now available on every Claude plan.

Meanwhile, OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger has jumped ship to OpenAI, adding a dash of competitive spice to the mix. Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, an alternative to third-party agent tools, is now the star of the show. Whether this restriction will save infrastructure costs or just burn developer trust remains the million-dollar (or token) question as we head into Q2 2026.
So, grab your popcorn (or your favorite Ankh-Morporkian snack) and watch as the AI world unfolds like a poorly written play. Will Anthropic’s gamble pay off, or will they end up with egg on their face? Only time-and a lot of tokens-will tell.
