Last November, a dedicated PlayStation fan noticed some hidden icons within the PS5’s software, which sparked a lot of discussion and guesses about what they might mean.
The recently discovered symbols sparked conversations about the possibility of a PC game launcher, hinting at features like being able to purchase a game once and play it on both PlayStation and PC, or direct support for PC gaming on the PS5.
The situation has changed recently, as reports indicate Sony is no longer planning to release PC versions of its games. Titles such as Ghost of Tsushima and Saros, which were previously intended for platforms like Steam, have now been cancelled.
It turns out the extra icons we talked about earlier have been taken out of the PS5’s system software without any announcement.
Zuby_Tech on X (formerly Twitter) brought this to everyone’s attention today, but it seems the icons were actually removed back in December, soon after people first found them. It’s likely the platform removed them after seeing the news coverage they generated.
As a big fan, it’s starting to feel like Sony might not be bringing many more of their single-player games to PC. If that’s true, all the talk about a dedicated PC launcher seems pretty pointless now. It’s a bit disappointing, honestly, but it looks like we won’t be getting one.
PlayStation recently updated its website, taking out mentions of PC gaming related to several of its development teams.
Although the company hasn’t officially announced a new strategy, its recent actions show it’s clearly heading in a different direction.
