Comcast, the company that owns Universal, is considering a potential takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), a deal that could significantly change the entertainment industry. Reuters reports that Comcast has enlisted Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to investigate the possibility of a merger and has already begun reviewing WBD’s financial information.
If negotiations succeed, this deal would be a huge event in media history, potentially bringing together major studios like Universal Pictures, DreamWorks, Illumination, Warner Bros., HBO, DC Studios, and Discovery Networks. It’s a massive plan that could dramatically change how movies are made and even impact theme parks.
A Streaming Superpower
The main reason for this possible deal is the intense competition in the streaming market. Both Max, from Warner Bros. Discovery, and Universal’s Peacock have had difficulty keeping up with leaders like Netflix and Disney+. If they joined forces, they would become a massive entertainment company with a huge collection of movies and shows.

The new combined catalog will feature popular shows and movies like The Office, Game of Thrones, Jurassic World, Batman, Friends, and The Fast and the Furious, among many others. This expanded offering could make the platform a major competitor to Disney+, with a wide range of content from critically acclaimed series to big-budget franchises.
NBCUniversal President Mike Cavanagh has said the company is willing to buy media companies that would fit well with their current operations. This suggests Comcast might see the current situation as a good opportunity for a strategic purchase.

Despite the potential benefits, this deal faces significant hurdles. Experts doubt the Trump administration would approve it, considering the President’s past disagreements with Comcast’s CEO. The merger would also likely face intense review from regulators, as it would put a large share of the entertainment industry under the control of a single company.
The Theme Park Factor
The potential benefits extend far beyond just streaming services and could significantly impact theme parks. Currently, Universal needs permission from Warner Bros. to use Harry Potter attractions, which limits how they can incorporate the franchise into their parks. If Comcast owned Warner Bros., Universal would have complete freedom to include the Wizarding World in all of its parks worldwide, without being restricted by licensing agreements.

As a huge Universal fan, I’m so excited about the potential for even more amazing experiences! I’m hoping we’ll see new attractions, shows, and themed lands based on Wizarding World, DC Comics, and Looney Tunes added to all the parks – Orlando, Hollywood, Japan, and the U.K. I know Six Flags currently handles DC and Looney Tunes, but I’m crossing my fingers Universal can work something out to bring those characters into their parks too!
The Hurdles Ahead
Warner Bros. Discovery, headed by CEO David Zaslav, has faced increasing pressure from investors recently due to challenging financial performance. This year, Zaslav has turned down several buyout offers, including three from Paramount Skydance, and dealt with rumors of interest from Netflix. During a recent call with investors, Zaslav didn’t comment on potential sales, but highlighted the company’s potential, predicting that its streaming service, Max, could reach 150 million subscribers by the end of the year.

Things are getting tougher for streaming services. With growth slowing down and ad revenue flatlining, it’s becoming increasingly likely that we’ll see more mergers and acquisitions rather than continued independent operation.
If Comcast merges with another company, it would not only become a bigger rival to Disney, but it would also build an entertainment company unlike any other – controlling everything from cable and streaming services to movies and theme parks.
The next major innovation in Hollywood might not originate from a new filmmaker or studio, but from a business deal between companies.
