Community Movie’s Delays Officially Explained by Writer (& There’s a Promising Update)

Fans have been eager for the Community movie, and now there’s some good news about its progress. During its original run, Community wasn’t just popular – it became known as one of the smartest and most original sitcoms ever made. The show also became a cultural phenomenon, with many of its jokes and memorable lines recognized even by people who didn’t regularly watch it. While announcing Community: The Movie thrilled fans, actually making it has been difficult.

On the podcast The Watch, Community writer Andrew Guest revealed they nearly started filming the long-awaited movie continuation after the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike ended. However, a scheduling conflict with one of the actors’ other projects caused further delays. While disappointing, this is actually a positive sign – it confirms the movie is still happening and gives fans hope that it’s moving forward, even if not as quickly as they’d like.

What To Expect From Community: The Movie (& Why This Update Is Good News)

Even though some recent comments from Andrew Guest might sound a bit discouraging, they could actually be a good sign for the upcoming Community movie. Donald Glover shared some plot details for 2024, explaining the film would center around a reunion of the original cast (excluding Chevy Chase’s character, Pierce Hawthorne). The story will be presented through a movie-within-a-movie format, created by Abed. While these details are subject to change, they currently suggest the film will effectively utilize the show’s beloved characters.

What always made the show Community great was the fantastic connection between its actors, so fans will be thrilled to see almost all of them returning for the movie. The idea of a reunion also gives the filmmakers plenty of time to work on it, as they can easily adjust the story to fit the actors’ current ages. Plus, the movie appears to recapture the show’s clever, self-aware humor, which is a great sign for a successful revival.

Although it’s still unclear which of the show’s beloved characters will return, recent news from creator Dan Harmon suggests the movie is still on track. Despite previous delays, those involved are still working hard to make it happen. Everything points to Community: The Movie being fantastic, even if fans have to be patient.
