Community’s 7 Funniest Characters, Ranked

Dan Harmon’s Community was a show that constantly faced the threat of being canceled (and eventually was, after its fifth season by NBC). It also had its share of behind-the-scenes drama, particularly when Chevy Chase was part of the cast. Despite these challenges, Community was a truly original, endearing show with perfectly chosen actors. It really stood out from other comedies, especially because of its clever use of pop culture and its willingness to switch genres from episode to episode while staying true to its characters. No other sitcom could pull off paintball episodes that felt like action movies! But what really made Community special, just like Greendale Community College itself, was its quirky and memorable group of students and teachers. Today, we’ll be taking a look at the funniest ones.

Those who didn’t make the cut included Jeff Winger, Britta Perry, Shirley Bennett, Leonard, Professor Ian Duncan, and Magnitude – you might know Magnitude as the guy who always shouts “Pop! Pop!”

7) Star-Burns

Dino Stamatopoulos, known for his work as a producer and writer on Community, also played Alex “Star-Burns” Osbourne. The character is intentionally simple and memorable, and that’s exactly what makes him funny.

He’s built around a single, funny idea. He tries to appear ordinary and blend in, but he has a very noticeable star-shaped beard that he proudly displays. This completely undermines his wish to be just another face in the crowd.

6) Annie

Alison Brie is a truly talented actress and comedian, so it’s no surprise her Community character, Annie Edison, appears on this list. While Annie isn’t necessarily known for being laugh-out-loud funny, she’s incredibly endearing, and Brie perfectly portrays her amazing, over-the-top reactions.

Despite her occasional dramatic outbursts, it’s the small, charming moments that really make Annie endearing. She’s intelligent, though sometimes impulsive, and her genuine nature combined with goofy behavior is consistently funny. A perfect example is when she’s playing a police officer with Shirley and accidentally sprays pepper spray into her own eyes while chasing a suspect.

5) Pierce Hawthorne

Chevy Chase was notoriously difficult to work with on the set of Community, causing problems for his fellow actors, creator Dan Harmon, and the entire crew. However, despite the behind-the-scenes issues, his character, Pierce Hawthorne, remains genuinely funny, largely due to Chase’s unique and often unpredictable delivery of his lines.

While we don’t approve of Chase’s behavior towards others, we can still appreciate his talent. Specifically, his repetitive and childlike delivery of “Greendale! Greendale!” is memorable enough to earn him a place here. Similarly, his endearing reactions – blushing, smiling, and politely thanking Jeff even after a harsh insult directed at Pierce – are charming and noteworthy.

4) Troy Barnes (& Abed Nadir)

Troy and Abed were inseparable – their characters defined each other. This was especially true until Donald Glover, who played Troy, departed the series.

Neither of these characters is hilarious on their own, and Abed’s unusual behavior can sometimes be annoying to watch, just like other characters point out. However, together they have the best chemistry on Community. Their contrasting personalities aren’t just cute—they’re often genuinely funny. They’re incredibly close, and you might even see one giving the other a piggyback ride through the halls of Greendale. They’re adults who playfully bring out the childlike side in each other, which is a lot of fun.

3) Garrett Lambert

Garrett Lambert, played by Erik Charles Nielsen, is a classic sitcom nerd. He’s always a mess, both in appearance and attitude, and constantly seems lost and bewildered – a truly clueless character.

Garrett delivers many memorable performances, from his frantic cries of “Crisis alert!” or “It’s a bear dance!” to his work as a motion capture alien. However, his most compelling storyline might be falling in love with a woman, only to discover she’s his cousin. As Troy put it, Garrett is a uniquely captivating and almost otherworldly presence – “like God spilled a person.”

2) Ben Chang

Most actors couldn’t pull off the character of Señor Chang – he’s incredibly annoying on purpose. The show highlights his instability, and it becomes more and more obvious as the series goes on.

Jeong manages to make his character, despite being intentionally unpleasant, surprisingly endearing. He’s not good – he’s a flawed person who lashes out at his students when his own life falls apart. The character experiences uniquely chaotic events that wouldn’t happen to anyone else. For example, he briefly suffers from unbelievable amnesia and briefly becomes a rising star, only to immediately insult Steven Spielberg to his face and ruin his chance at success.

1) Dean Pelton

Jim Rash’s portrayal of Dean Pelton was a comedic highlight of the show. He consistently delivered funny moments, appearing in a remarkable 96 out of the series’ 110 episodes.

The Dean is a hilariously quirky character, constantly flattering Jeff and showing up to work in a new costume several times a week. There’s a running gag about him watching a video of someone dressed as a Dalmatian and nervously hoping it doesn’t inspire him, too. The actor, Rash, plays the Dean with so much energy and charm that you can’t help but adore him.
