With a story set seven years after the events of Control and featuring Jesse Faden’s brother, Dylan, Control Resonant is clearly intended to be a sequel. Remedy Entertainment acknowledges this connection, but also emphasizes that the game is a complete and self-contained experience, as creative director Mikael Kasurinen explains.
He described the new game as a sequel, but emphasized it’s also a complete experience on its own. He compared both games to siblings – part of the same series, but with unique personalities and stories, and ultimately connected to each other.
It’s interesting to note that the story follows Dylan’s journey through New York City to stop The Hiss and other supernatural dangers – including some new ones – as a kind of opposite to Jesse’s story. Jesse was stuck inside the Oldest House, needing to learn its secrets to become Director of the FBC. Dylan, however, grew up within the Oldest House and is now experiencing the outside world for the first time in a long time.
Kasurinen explained that the transition is about moving from a life of isolation – a captivity that feels normal to the individual – into the broader world. While that world seems strange and unfamiliar to him, it’s the world we all know, and that contrast is really compelling.
Coming out this year, Control Resonant is quite different from the first game. It offers a large, open world where you can follow the main story, but also freely explore the city of Manhattan, interact with survivors, and discover hidden secrets.
As you play, you’ll help Dylan strengthen the Aberrant, gaining new abilities for both its forms. You’ll also defeat tough enemies called Resonants and learn their powers. You can find more information here, but overall, this is looking like Remedy’s largest and most impressive game to date, offering something for both players who like to explore everything and those focused on the narrative.
