Launched in 2018, Blue Lock quickly became a massive success, selling over 50 million copies around the world. It gained recognition early on, winning the Kodansha Manga Award in 2021. Following the anime’s release in 2023, Blue Lock became the best-selling manga of the year, even outselling popular series like Jujutsu Kaisen and One Piece. Written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura, the manga continues to be released in weekly chapters in Weekly Shonen Magazine.
The anime Blue Lock follows Isagi Yoichi, a talented player selected for a special training program. Despite the show’s popularity, the second season received significant criticism for its animation quality. Studio 8bit’s work was described as lacking smooth motion, with characters often appearing to slide across the screen instead of moving naturally. An animator later explained that the animation suffered due to challenging production conditions and a very tight schedule. Following this criticism, the studio announced a new fantasy anime, Witch and Mercenary, scheduled for release in 2027.
What Is Witch and Mercenary About?
This anime is adapted from a continuing light novel series by Kaeru Chouhoukiteki, with illustrations by Bench Kanase. The story takes place in a world where witches are feared as incredibly powerful and dangerous beings. They’re capable of devastating acts, like causing floods, summoning firestorms, and even destroying entire nations on their own. Because of this, no one…
Witches are considered the most dangerous beings imaginable. They inspire fear and can cause immense destruction – from sudden storms and fireballs to the ruin of entire nations. If you earn a witch’s anger, no one will be able to protect you.
Everyone believes Siasha deserves to die, which is why she’s constantly fighting for her life. After narrowly surviving another attack, she joins forces with a mercenary named Zig and sets off on a journey to find a peaceful place to live. But will they be able to overcome the dangerous magic and terrifying creatures that await them?
