Steve McDonald, played by Simon Gregson, is deeply upset on Coronation Street after his father, Jim, died. He’s been angrily confronting Ben Driscoll, played by Aaron McCusker, over the loss.
Ben told a really thoughtless joke about the founder of McDonald’s, not realizing that the man is actually his own father.
Last month, TopMob reported that Jim would die off-screen after being on the show for 36 years. His death will deeply affect Steve, who often had a difficult relationship with his father.
The news will greatly impact the Driscolls, his neighbors. Maggie (Pauline McLynn) has been keeping a long-held secret: she had an affair with Jim in the 1980s, resulting in their son, Ben. For forty years, she’s led everyone to believe her husband, Alan, was Ben’s father.
Today on the show, Steve’s girlfriend, Cassie Plummer (played by Claire Sweeney), was planning to propose to him with a little help from Mary Taylor (Patti Clare). She’d arranged for a large flower display at Victoria Gardens and was about to ask him to marry her when she received the devastating news about Jim’s passing.
The news completely shocked him, so he went to the Rovers pub to get over it with his close friend, Tim Metcalfe.

Maggie offered everyone a drink and then spoke privately with Amy Barlow, asking about the circumstances of her grandfather’s death. Amy explained that he’d been unwell for some time and didn’t think the conversation was significant.
Is Maggie wondering if Jim has a family history of illness? He was diagnosed with myotonic dystrophy years ago, which is a disease that causes muscles to weaken over time.
Tracy Barlow noticed Cassie slipping an engagement ring into Mary’s pocket and immediately understood Steve was about to be proposed to. She threatened to reveal everything to Steve, but Tim urged her to be considerate of his recent loss.
