The death of Jim McDonald, played by Charles Lawson, will cause major problems for another family in Coronation Street in the next few weeks.
TopMob announced last month that a beloved character would die, but the death won’t actually be shown on screen. This will leave the character’s son, Steve (played by Simon Gregson), upset and struggling with the news.
Viewers are starting to see Cassie Plummer’s (Claire Sweeney) proposal plans for Steve unfold, but they’ll be interrupted next week when the family learns of Jim’s death.
Beverley Callard, known for her role in a British soap opera, is now appearing in the Irish drama Fair City, and won’t be back for the funeral. Her wife, Liz, moved to Spain in 2020 to be with their son, Andy (Nicholas Cochrane), and won’t be returning either.
TopMob has learned that the death will reveal a long-held secret of Maggie Driscoll, the building’s landlady (played by Pauline McLynn).

Back in the 1980s, she had an affair with Jim, and they had son Ben (Aaron McCusker) together.
This follows an episode showing her difficult marriage to her late husband, Alan. It was revealed she unintentionally caused his death when he fell down the stairs.
Did Alan know of her fling with Jim?
Soon after Maggie moved in, she reacted with fright to something she noticed in Ken Barlow’s (William Roache) sideboard, hinting that she’d been aware of a link to her neighbors for a while.

Steve and Ben have become quite close lately, which has upset Steve’s good friend, Tim Metcalfe. In today’s episode, Ben even gave Steve a ride to the hospital, but Steve chose not to go inside to see Jim.
What impact will this have on Maggie, and could it lead to resentment from Ben?
