The floor has fallen from beneath Ronnie Bailey‘s (Vinta Morgan) feet in Coronation Street.
It’s been a difficult time for the character, as his wife, Debbie Webster (played by Sue Devaney), was wrongly convicted of causing death by dangerous driving – only a few weeks after their wedding.
As fans of the show are aware, Carl Webster, who is secretly manipulative, was actually the one driving. He forced her into the driver’s seat to make it look like she committed the crime.
Although she hadn’t done anything wrong, Debbie didn’t seem to mind taking the blame and potentially going to prison for him. It quickly became clear she was hiding a painful secret, and was determined to protect the man she considered her brother.
Okay, so this is a big reveal! We learn that Carl’s mother actually gave him up for adoption nearly forty years ago, letting her own parents step in and raise him as their own. It’s a surprisingly emotional backstory that really adds layers to her character and explains a lot about her present-day motivations.

Carl was completely unaware of the truth, and was ready to confess everything to the police. However, when he found out Debbie had been lying to him his whole life, he changed his mind. He vowed to never see her again and officially ended their relationship.
Since the recent events, Carl has been drinking heavily and spends his days at the Rovers Return pub. He’s been angrily confronting Ryan Connor, blaming him for losing his job after Ryan was responsible for Debbie’s hotel.

In today’s episode, he enlisted a mate, Jez, to enact his plan to torch the hotel.
Jez approached Ronnie, pretending to be a handyman looking for work. While talking to him, he quickly snapped pictures of the fire exits and security cameras, then left.
The two men later met at Victoria Gardens to plan the arson, but Ronnie was secretly watching them from a distance.

After Carl left, Ronnie walked over to Jez, quickly snapped a photo of him, and cautioned that Carl wasn’t reliable. Then, Ronnie went after Carl to the pub, making it clear that he wouldn’t tolerate any further misbehavior.
An infuriated Carl said that Debbie would always put him before her husband, as she’s his mother.
Ronnie was completely shocked. But will Carl actually go through with his plan to destroy his mother’s company?
