Costco reportedly comments on removing Xbox stock — “We don’t have any plans going forward to carry an Xbox console.”

What does Xbox and Ferrari have in common? Well, primarily you can say they’re pretty expensive.

Microsoft has been slowly increasing the price of its Xbox Series X and S consoles both in the US and internationally. However, customers in the United States are experiencing the biggest price increases because of tariffs imposed on imported goods during President Trump’s administration.

Most Xbox consoles are made in China, and import taxes on those products increase their cost. While things like computers and smartphones don’t have these taxes, video game consoles unfortunately do.

Microsoft has increased the price of Xbox Series X|S consoles in the US twice now. This is because of taxes the company has to pay when importing consoles from China, which cuts into their already small profits on the hardware. Like most other console makers, including PlayStation, Microsoft is passing these extra costs onto customers, resulting in higher prices. Some stores aren’t pleased with the price increases.

Costco is a retailer that has recently stopped selling Xbox consoles and accessories in its stores worldwide. While neither Costco nor Microsoft has officially commented on this change, Destin Legarie, a former IGN journalist, reports he’s received a statement from the company explaining the situation.

I just called Costco hoping to snag an Xbox, but unfortunately, they told me they’ve stopped selling them altogether. The representative specifically said they don’t plan to carry Xbox consoles in the future – it was a business decision. On the bright side, they still have awesome deals on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation! I checked on September 25, 2025.

Destin shared on X that he contacted Costco about Xbox availability and was told they’ve decided to stop selling Xbox consoles. According to Costco, this was a business decision, but they currently have good deals on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation consoles.

We’ve confirmed this isn’t a temporary issue or just a lack of stock. Costco is actually getting rid of Xbox consoles and putting them on sale in some areas. Something’s happening, but Microsoft hasn’t said anything about it yet.

Xbox Series X|S hardware still remains globally available, with the Xbox Ally imminent

Xbox hasn’t had a strong showing this generation. After the disappointing response to the Xbox One, Microsoft has struggled to catch up with PlayStation. However, the gaming landscape itself has shifted.

Even though Xbox hardware sales haven’t been strong, Microsoft is doing well by releasing its popular games on PlayStation and PC. The Xbox Series X|S console is also performing better than expected. A major factor in Microsoft’s success is Xbox Game Pass, a subscription service exclusive to the Microsoft gaming world. While fewer people own an Xbox compared to other consoles, Xbox players tend to be very active and spend more money on games.

Microsoft’s approach of making Xbox a central part of everything they do is proving successful. The gaming division is now performing better than Windows and is becoming a key part of Microsoft’s business. Even though Xbox hardware sales haven’t always been strong, developers are supporting the platform more than ever. We’re seeing examples like Square Enix bringing Final Fantasy back to Xbox, and even PlayStation publishing the popular game Helldivers 2 on Xbox Series X|S this summer.

The loss of Costco as a retailer is definitely concerning. Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox consoles are likely to run on Windows and function more like PCs, which could allow companies like ASUS to build their own Xbox-compatible computers for home entertainment. The Xbox Ally handheld PC, launching on October 16, 2025, offers a first look at this new approach, but it seems Costco won’t be involved.

There’s plenty of others still willing to carry Xbox hardware, though, as you can see below.
