I’ve always been amazed by Tim Burton’s creativity, and Johnny Depp is such a huge part of bringing those amazing visions to life! They’ve worked together so many times – think *Edward Scissorhands*, *Charlie and the Chocolate Factory*, and even *Dark Shadows*. But honestly, I think their best collaboration was a really unexpected movie they made in the 2000s. It’s become a classic in its genre and still stands out as one of the highlights of both their careers, in my opinion.
Tim Burton and Johnny Depp previously worked together on films like *Ed Wood*, *Sleepy Hollow*, and *Corpse Bride* in the 1990s and early 2000s. They teamed up again in 2007 for *Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street*. This dark and musical thriller, based on the stage show by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler, began streaming on Paramount+ on September 1st. The film stars Depp as Sweeney Todd, a barber who returns to London after being exiled, seeking revenge and becoming a serial killer.
Why You Should Watch Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Music is always a key element in Tim Burton’s films, but *Sweeney Todd* stands out as one of the few he’s made as a full-fledged musical – and it’s a brilliant one. The film beautifully translates Sondheim’s story to the screen, featuring a stunning score by Sondheim that creates the film’s haunting atmosphere. This blends seamlessly with Burton’s trademark dark and quirky style, which perfectly complements the story’s gloomy nature. Often seen as a return to his roots, *Sweeney Todd* is a surprisingly successful adaptation and remains a favorite among fans.
As a longtime fan of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp’s work together, I always come back to *Sweeney Todd*. It feels like a peak for them, arriving near the end of their frequent collaborations. Depp had already proven he could carry a Burton film, but *Sweeney Todd* really surprised me with his vocal performance – he brought a real force to the character. And the chemistry between Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, who plays Mrs. Lovett, is just electric. It’s a fantastic supporting cast too, with standout performances from Alan Rickman and Jamie Campbell Bower, but it’s Depp and Carter who truly shine.
Other Horror Movies Now on Paramount+
Paramount+ really focused on spooky content in September. Along with the film *Sweeney Todd*, they added titles like *Sleepy Hollow*, *Disturbia*, *Kiss the Girls*, *The Addams Family*, *The Gift*, the first three *Scary Movie* films, and eight *Friday the 13th* movies, plus a lot more.
Paramount+ wasn’t alone in adding a lot of horror movies this month. Popular films like *The Sixth Sense*, *The Autopsy of Jane Doe*, and *Psycho* are now available on different streaming services.
