Voit is back and has an entirely new role in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 19.
Before becoming a hit on Paramount+, Criminal Minds originally aired as a procedural drama on CBS for an impressive 15 seasons. This long run allowed viewers to become deeply connected to the work of the BAU team and the personal stories of its members. The show initially ended in 2020 with a finale that saw Penelope Garcia leave the bureau, providing a fitting conclusion to the original series. Fortunately for fans, Paramount+ quickly revived the show for streaming.
For many fans, the original BAU team will always be memorable. However, Criminal Minds: Evolution has successfully blended those familiar faces with new characters in Emily Prentiss’ team. This version of the show, now on streaming, differs from its time on CBS by focusing on a single, complex case each season. So far, Elias Voit has been the main villain, but the trailer for the next season reveals a new direction for his character.
The trailer for season 19 of Criminal Minds: Evolution is now available on Paramount+. It shows what the BAU team is working on after wrapping up the Sicarius case in season 18. The minute-and-40-second trailer reveals that Elias Voit is undergoing rehabilitation and is even the subject of a true-crime podcast. Interestingly, the BAU now considers him a valuable source of information. You can watch the trailer here:
Season 19 of Criminal Minds: Evolution will feature several guest stars alongside the main cast, including Zach Gilford as a key character undergoing a transformation. These guest appearances include Connor Storrie (known from Heated Rivalry), Justin Kirk (Angels in America), Yvette Nicole Brown (Community), Cress Williams (Black Lightning), Kofi Siriboe (Queen Sugar), Lyndon Smith (Step Sisters), Richard Cabral (Mayans), Jeri Ryan (Star Trek Voyager), Rob Yang (The Menu), Nicholas Gonzalez (The Good Doctor), Inny Clemons (Judging Amy), Nicole Pacent (Westworld), Dash Mihok (Ray Donovan), Joseph Cross (Big Little Lies), and Cara Jade Myers (Killers of the Flower Moon). Clark Gregg will return as FBI Director Ray Madison, and Paul F. Tompkins will reprise his role as Brian Garrity.
Each season of Criminal Minds: Evolution has centered on the experiences of one or two main characters. Previous seasons explored difficult periods for Dave Rossi and JJ Jarreau, and the latest trailer suggests this season will focus on Luke Alvez, played by Adam Rodriguez. These character-focused storylines often delve into personal issues beyond just the cases they work on, so it’s interesting to see what challenges Alvez will face in season 19, particularly with the show’s shift in how they’re portraying the villain, Voit, who is no longer depicted as a purely evil killer.
Bringing back the character of Voit after three seasons, and dedicating a new storyline to his recovery, is a clever way to revitalize the series. The show doesn’t seem to be wrapping up his story anytime soon, which is good news, as actor Zach Gilford portrays the role convincingly. With ‘Criminal Minds’ already renewed for a 20th season, it remains to be seen if that will still happen after this current arc.
