The story of Crimson Desert starts with a brutal attack. You play as Kliff, a strong and honorable warrior from the Greymane clan. When a rival group, the Black Bears, attacks his homeland, many of his allies are killed. The few survivors are scattered across the large continent of Pywel. Kliff narrowly escapes the massacre and is now fueled by a desire for revenge. He wants to take back his tribe’s homeland, Pailune, but first, he decides to reunite the remaining Greymanes before launching an attack.
The visual style and community within Greymane’s world draw inspiration from the historical clans of the Scottish Highlands. Kliff’s journey to bring his companions back together is reminiscent of the tales of leaders who rebuilt after devastating losses. However, let’s focus on what’s confirmed: the story of Crimson Desert begins with a personal tragedy, but quickly grows into a larger, more complex mystery. As the story unfolds, you’ll meet a diverse group of characters – friends and foes alike – and explore strange realms and competing factions, all of which will determine the future of Pywel.
Kliff is the main character you’ll play in Crimson Desert, and Alec Newman provides his voice. Newman describes Kliff as someone with a strong moral compass. While Kliff may seem reserved and quiet at first, he opens up around his tribe. Interestingly, quieter people often have deep thoughts, and this will be reflected in Kliff’s abilities as a versatile fighter. According to Newman in the game’s “Meet the Cast” video, Crimson Desert’s diverse combat system will allow you to use your creativity and Kliff’s skills in unique ways during each battle.
Besides the main character, Crimson Desert features two more playable characters: Oongka, a powerful orc nomad, and Damiane, a skilled gunsmith. Oongka is also a survivor of the Greymane tribe, a strong warrior who always goes all-in. According to his voice actor, Stewart Scudamore, Oongka is motivated by a deep passion for his people and a desire to improve their lives. Surprisingly, beneath his tough exterior, Oongka is also thoughtful and possesses wisdom gained from experience.
While Kliff often relies on keeping his emotions hidden, Oongka seems to easily switch between understanding others and being decisive, even harsh when necessary. Both characters are able to step back from difficult situations, think clearly, and act based on strong principles. This shared outlook makes them ideal partners.
Damiane’s connection to the group is a bit unclear. While she isn’t one of the original three, she likely supports their goals. The available footage shows her as a fugitive, suggesting she might be joining Greymane’s growing forces for protection. Regardless, she’s a skilled fighter, equally proficient with both guns and magic. Like Kliff and Oongka, she’s strong-willed and practical, meaning she’s someone who will always fight for what she believes is right.
Because she has no history with the Greymane clan, she might have an advantage they lack: the ability to remain emotionally detached. This could mean she’s not only a skilled ranged fighter, but also a valuable strategist for the tribe. Her calm demeanor likely stems from this detachment, not from being overly defensive or deeply thoughtful.
Before the game was released, people thought Yann might be a playable character, and some believe Naira is related to Kliff. What we do know is that both Yann and Naira will be important in the Greymane family’s rebellion. However, we’ll have to play Crimson Desert ourselves to learn more about their stories and help rebuild the Greymane home.

What does it mean to rebuild the Greymanes’ home? Their original homeland was lost, and they’ve since settled in Harnand as a temporary replacement while they work towards reclaiming their place in Pailune. The Greymanes are known for being helpful, so expect quests around Harnand that involve assisting the local people. We’ll likely encounter important allies, but details are still to come. The people you meet during this time might be simple workers or those offering quests.
Throughout this part of the story, you’ll gather members of the Greymane clan who have become separated, and give them jobs to help rebuild. These tasks include things like fishing, caring for animals, scouting, and military work. They’ll keep the clan growing even while Kliff and his friends are on their own adventures.
The Black Bears are the villains of the game, and they’re led by the brutal Myurdin. They’re a chaotic and violent group, and their actions kick off the dark events of Crimson Desert’s story. Myurdin is known for fighting with the fierce determination of a bear. The Black Bears want to throw Pywel into chaos, hoping to seize power from the resulting instability. Eliminating the Greymanes is a major move in their plan to control the entire continent.
As you explore Harnand and beyond, you’ll encounter many powerful bosses. We’ll just briefly mention some of the bosses from Crimson Desert here, as we have a separate, more detailed guide coming soon – keep an eye out for it!
In Harnand, you’ll meet Kliff and encounter Matthias, a knight who leads the Wandering Freeswords. This fight will be an early challenge, letting you test the skills you’ve been learning. Later, you’ll face Hexe, a powerful enchantress with a frightening, horror game-inspired design. Other enemies include Reed Devil, a former outsider now tormenting the people of Harnand; White Horn, a dangerous mountain spirit; Staglord, a fallen king guarding a ruined throne; and Queen Stoneback Crab, a massive, gem-covered giant reminiscent of the Colossus from Shadow of the Colossus. So far, these are the confirmed encounters, along with the tyrannical goblin Split Horn and the giant mechanical dragon Golden Star. Each enemy is tied to the region’s myths and tragic history, hinting that Pywel was once ruled by powerful figures who fell from grace, became cursed, or transformed into monstrous beasts.
In Golden Star, you’ll meet Marni, a brilliant but eccentric inventor. He’s responsible for the unique and often makeshift technology found in one of Pywel’s five nations. While he creates strange robots, rockets, and mechanical tanks, it’s unclear what else his inventions are capable of beyond being used as weapons.

Okay, so the ongoing war between the Greymanes and Black Bears is a big part of the story in Crimson Desert, but honestly, there’s something way bigger going on. It’s this thing called the Abyss, and people say it holds secrets that could destroy everything. If Kliff’s not just out for revenge, it’s gotta be about figuring out what the Abyss is all about.
The Abyss is a mysterious place, and while its true nature is unknown, evidence suggests it’s a gateway to another dimension. This other dimension seems to house even more dangerous foes. As you learn more about the Abyss, you might realize that the conflicts between Kliff’s clan are less important than the larger threat it poses.
Many players are wondering if Crimson Desert’s story will be revealed gradually through exploring the world and lengthy conversations, similar to some other games. While that method created a large and detailed world, it could be hard to follow. However, Crimson Desert is designed as a single-player game, so we can expect a stronger focus on a clear, central storyline. The game will likely still feature environmental storytelling and optional lore, but the main story of Pywel will probably be delivered through voice acting, cutscenes, and key story moments, making it easier to follow than having to uncover everything yourself.
Since much of the backstory for Pywel is still unknown, fans are already coming up with their own ideas to explain things. One popular theory is that the pieces of the Abyss used to strengthen Kliff are actually harming the world. Essentially, Kliff could be unintentionally causing the problems that threaten the entire continent.
As we mentioned before, there’s a compelling connection between the Greymanes’ society and the traditional Highland clans. It’s more than just a visual similarity, like Kliff’s warpaint resembling William Wallace in Braveheart; this suggests the Greymanes’ efforts to reclaim their lost heritage will be powerful, but ultimately unsuccessful.
Crimson Desert begins as a story of revenge, but quickly expands into a larger fantasy mystery. As you restore the Greymanes, fight the Black Bears, and uncover the secrets of the Abyss, the narrative becomes much more intricate. If successful, Crimson Desert promises a story that goes beyond a simple conflict between rival groups.
