Crimson Desert Studio is “More Adaptable, More Malleable”: “We Can Pivot Faster Versus the AAAs”

A major update for Crimson Desert is launching this week, featuring new and unique mounts. This raises the question of how Pearl Abyss is able to respond to player requests so quickly. According to Will Powers, the company’s marketing and planning director, everything is adjusted and improved based on player feedback as it comes in.

Given the studio’s history with games like Black Desert and the massively multiplayer online (MMO) focus of Crimson Desert, this approach isn’t unexpected. The team is also open to new ideas and isn’t overly strict about them. As the developer put it, they function like a small, independent studio creating a high-quality, big-budget game, allowing for creativity and flexibility.

As a fan, what I really appreciate about this team is how quickly they can change things up and try new ideas. It’s amazing! They’re so nimble, unlike those huge, established studios that have to worry so much about their brand image. It makes sense too – apparently, the whole marketing team is only six people, which explains why everything feels so connected and personal.

Despite being independent, Pearl Abyss is far from a small company. They’ve previously bought the developers of EVE Online (now known as Fenris Creations) and have made investments in other game studios. They’re also currently developing two more large games, DokeV and Plan 8.

Despite everything, many people are impressed with how Pearl Abyss has continued to support Crimson Desert after its release – and it may be helping sales, which have now surpassed five million copies.
