Crunchyroll is dominating the Winter 2026 anime season with several exclusive titles that fans are really enjoying. Interestingly, the most popular show of the season is actually an Isekai anime – a genre about being transported to another world. While many Isekai shows are released each season, recently, fantasy stories without the transported-to-another-world element have been gaining attention. That was initially the case with Sentenced to Be a Hero.
The anime Sentenced to Be a Hero quickly gained popularity, captivating viewers with its immersive dark fantasy world and a unique premise – a hero who wasn’t a newcomer from another world. Fans were eager to learn more about this world, and each episode continued to expand on it. However, the latest episode revealed a surprising twist: one of the heroes is actually from another world, meaning the show has incorporated elements of the ‘Isekai’ genre after all.
Sentenced to Be a Hero Reveals It’s an Isekai With Episode 4

In Episode 5 of Sentenced to Be a Hero, Xylo Forbartz and the other heroes await their next assignment while Kivia explains the world’s goddesses. She reveals that each goddess appears when a dangerous Demon Blight arises, and each possesses a special power used to combat it. For instance, the central goddess, Teoritta, can summon swords, and another can foresee the future.
Xylo mentions a rumor that one of the goddesses previously transported a hero to this world. This means that “Sentenced to Be a Hero,” initially praised for being a fantasy anime without the typical ‘isekai’ (another world) trope, actually is an isekai story. However, the person brought from another world isn’t the main character, but rather the most heartbreaking figure in the series.
Who Is Tatsuya in Sentenced to Be a Hero?

In the world of Sentenced to Be a Hero, the strongest warriors are actually criminals facing the ultimate punishment. They’re forced to fight dangerous missions until they die, only to be brought back to life and forced to fight again. However, each time they’re revived, they lose a piece of their memory or personality. Tatsuya is a prime example – he’s incredibly strong and easily defeats monsters, but he’s lost much of his ability to think for himself.
He seems to have no personality or motivation when it comes to fighting, which makes his situation even sadder if he was brought to this world from another one. It’s truly a terrible fate for this Japanese boy, forced to fight demons in a never-ending loop of death and resurrection, and all without any real purpose.
