The anime Witch Hat Atelier finally premiered on Crunchyroll as part of the Spring 2026 season. Originally planned for release last year, production delays pushed back the premiere date. There were whispers that the anime had been in development for seven years, a claim few questioned given its incredibly beautiful animation. The series is adapted from the popular fantasy manga of the same name by Kamone Shirahama, which has been published in Kodansha’s Morning Two magazine since July 2016.
Because the original manga is still being created, we anticipate that the anime will have several seasons, particularly given how popular it’s become. Shortly after the anime premiered, Hiroaki Kojima, the producer and president of BUG FILMS, explained the production timeline, correcting a widely spread misconception.
Witch Hat Atelier Was Under Production For 3.5 Years Before Its Premiere

Hideo Kojima recently shared some insights on his X account about the anime adaptation of his work. He explained that while the anime was announced in 2022, his studio, BUGFILMS, didn’t become involved until 2023, after he was brought on through a connection. He added that he can’t share many details about the production timeline.
He explained that the project took around three and a half years to produce. He also said it was the most time he’d had to work on a project, and he expressed his gratitude to the entire production team.
Fans had been hearing rumors for seven years about this anime being in development. The producer recently explained that those rumors were misleading because the studio, BUG FILMS, wasn’t even founded until 2021. The anime wasn’t officially announced until 2022, and production didn’t actually begin until 2023. Despite the long wait, the series has become one of the most popular new anime releases.
Witch Hat Atelier Captivates Fans With Gorgeous Visuals and an Intriguing Story

From the moment it first aired, this anime has drawn viewers in with its beautiful animation, which perfectly captures the detailed artwork of the original manga. The story takes place in a magical world where only certain people are born with the power to become witches. Although magic exists in everyday life, it’s a rare gift. Coco, a seemingly ordinary girl, helps at her mother’s dress shop but dreams of becoming a witch, despite knowing it’s likely impossible.
Her lifelong dream comes true when she meets Qifrey, a famous witch, who visits her mother’s shop. After accidentally causing a terrible event, she discovers a long-held secret about witches. Hoping to find someone using dangerous, forbidden magic, she asks Qifrey for help. He invites her to join his workshop, offering her the chance to train and become a witch herself.
The series follows a dark and challenging path as the main character explores the world of witches. New episodes are released every Monday at 7:00 A.M. PT on Crunchyroll, with both subtitled and dubbed versions available. While the anime is also streaming on Netflix, it’s currently limited to select Asian countries, and a U.S. release date hasn’t been announced. The first season will have 13 episodes, and there are no plans for a second season at this time.
