Fullmetal Alchemist is widely considered one of the best anime series of all time. For years, fans ranked it number one on the popular website MyAnimeList. Creator Hiromu Arakawa crafted a powerful story that explores themes like family, war, and difficult moral decisions, all brought to life through a unique system of alchemy. The second anime adaptation is considered the best version, as it closely follows the manga’s complete story and has left many viewers searching for another series with the same level of depth and emotional impact.
Numerous shows have tried to capture the magic of Fullmetal Alchemist, but none have quite measured up. Now, it appears the original creator, Arakawa, might have finally delivered a worthy follow-up with her new series, Daemons of the Shadow Realm. After running for years as a manga, the story has been adapted into an anime by Bones Film – the same studio that brought Fullmetal Alchemist to life. However, what really makes Daemons of the Shadow Realm feel like a successor isn’t just these connections, but something much more fundamental.
Crunchyroll’s Daemons of the Shadow Realm Is the Perfect Successor to Fullmetal Alchemist

The anime series based on Daemons of the Shadow Realm started this spring, and the first episode suggested a more serious and mature storyline, much like the author’s most famous work. The animation style is also very similar to Fullmetal Alchemist. While the first episode didn’t reveal much, it did show a hint of a complicated relationship between siblings. By the second episode, the series really hits its stride, offering a complete introduction to the story and giving viewers a clear idea of where things are going.
The series is quickly proving itself to be a worthy successor to Fullmetal Alchemist by unveiling the secrets surrounding Yuru’s sister, Asa, and subtly building a complex and fascinating world. The emotional connection between Asa and Yuru echoes the powerful bond between the Elric brothers, and the introduction of supernatural creatures called Daemons functions similarly to the role of alchemy in Fullmetal Alchemist. But it’s the series’ ability to balance dark, serious themes with lighter moments and compelling characters that really solidifies this comparison.
What truly makes this anime a great follow-up is its animation by Bones Film – the visuals are just as sharp and smooth as the original. If you loved Fullmetal Alchemist or are looking for something similar, Daemons of the Shadow Realm is a fantastic choice, and with today’s animation technology and the creator’s improved skills, it might even be better.
