Crystal Lake Creator Teases the Friday the 13th Prequel Series Will Be Violent & Bloody

What happens with the original Friday the 13th movies remains unclear, but the franchise is moving forward with a new prequel. The upcoming series, titled Friday the 13th: Beginnings, will tell the story of Jason Voorhees’ mother, Pamela Voorhees.

The new series has been in the works for a long time and has gone through several changes in creative leadership. Originally, Alex Kurtzman, a co-creator of Star Trek: Discovery, was involved, but he was later replaced. According to showrunner Brad Caleb Kane in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the show will be a suspenseful, violent thriller set in the 1970s.

The new Friday the 13th prequel, coming to Peacock, features Linda Cardellini—an actress nominated for three Emmy Awards—as Pamela Vorhees. Director Kane describes the film as a suspenseful psychological thriller, heavily inspired by the paranoid thrillers of the 1970s.

He explained that the show has many elements of a slasher film – lots of blood and clever, shocking deaths – but it doesn’t fully fit the genre. These violent moments aren’t just for shock value; they actually contribute to the story, the characters, and the overall atmosphere.

Kane explained his approach to reimagining Crystal Lake and a Friday the 13th prequel by focusing on the time period when the original film was released. He wanted to capture the feel of the 1970s – a time marked by paranoia, distrust of authority, and the rise of the women’s liberation movement. He aimed to explore these themes within the new story.

What Is Crystal Lake About?

The original Friday the 13th film, released in 1980, featured Pamela Voorhees as the killer. She targeted camp counselors at Camp Crystal Lake, seeking revenge for the drowning of her son, Jason, who she believed was neglected by the counselors. However, the next movie changed the story, making Jason himself the killer and the main villain of the series.

While the story of Crystal Lake is still under wraps, director Kane has highly praised Nancy Cardellini’s acting. He believes she’ll be a standout in the role, surprising audiences and earning significant recognition. He described her performance as exceptionally brilliant but couldn’t share further details.

In addition to Nancy Cardellini, the cast of Crystal Lake includes William Catlett (known for Abigail), Devin Kessler (Godfather of Harlem), Cameron Scoggins (Shades of Blue), and Gwendolyn Sundstrom, a new face, as Grace.

Although a specific release date for Crystal Lake hasn’t been announced, it will be available to stream on Peacock. Plans for a prior release were considered, but ultimately didn’t happen. However, in December 2024, Kane assured fans the show is still coming soon.
