Cult Classic Horror Franchise Returns Next Week With an All-Star Roster of Creators

The next issue, Super Creepshow Special #1, is going to be quite a departure from what fans have seen before in the series.

As the 2025 Halloween season begins, it’s a great time for those who enjoy all things spooky to celebrate with some of the most chilling classic movies. However, some comic book enthusiasts might prefer their scares through illustrated stories. Fortunately, fans of horror can get the best of both worlds with the newest installment of the darkly funny comic book series.

This series began as a spin-off from the 1982 film directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King. This special edition will appeal to both fans of scary stories and those who enjoy classic superhero content.

Super Creepshow Special #1 brings together a talented group of well-known comic book creators for three frightening stories centered around caped characters. The artwork playfully references the iconic cover of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, replacing Batman with The Creep. The stories themselves draw inspiration from familiar origin stories and classic comic book storylines, but with some unexpected and sinister turns.

The first story is by Dan Watters, known for Batman: Dark Patterns and Destro, and artist Carmine Di Giandomenico. It centers around a strong crimefighter who dies, is then brought back to life, but isn’t quite the same person anymore. This storyline feels similar to , just as the story from Ed Brisson and Andrei Bressan – about a special serum falling into the wrong hands – feels like a different version of Captain America, imagining what would happen if Steve Rogers wasn’t the perfect hero we all know.

The second story immediately brings to mind the . Penned by X-Men‘s Ryan Stegman and brought to life with artwork by The Moon is Following Us co-creator Riley Rossmo, it centers around a superhero called the Grave Ghost, who must investigate his own death.

The Creepshow Comic Has Served Up Scares For Years

The Creepshow comic book series began publication with Image Comics in 2023. It’s directly based on the original anthology TV show on Shudder, which itself was created as a homage to scary comics from the 1950s, like Vault of Horror and the classic Tales from the Crypt>. Essentially, this new series is a comic book version of a TV show that started as a movie inspired by comic books. It’s quite a neat cycle!

Image Comics will release a new title in Sept. 2025. The unsettling release features two stories from well-known comic creators. One story, by Green Lantern: Fracture Spectrum writer Jeremy Adams and 100 Bullets artist Eduardo Risso, is a twisted love story with a theme of rebelling against the wealthy. The other half of the issue is by Rosie Knight and Oliver Ono, the team behind IDW’s Godzilla: Monster Island Summer Camp, and tells the story of a writer who rents a secluded home with a strange rule: never enter the smaller house on the property.

The newest edition of Creepshow, the second of five issues planned for Volume 4, will be available later in October, offering readers more spooky stories just in time for Halloween. Issues three and four are scheduled to be released in November and December, respectively.

Super Creepshow Special hits shelves and digital platforms on Oct. 8, 2025.
