A horror game that gained a dedicated following after its 2017 release is getting a sequel. The horror genre is known for having many unique and popular, but lesser-known, titles. While games like Resident Evil and Five Nights at Freddy’s achieve mainstream success, there are often hidden gems like Faith: The Unholy Trinity or Pathologic. Now, one of those under-the-radar horror games is surprisingly getting a new installment, much to the delight of its fans.
The first trailer and details for Darkwood 2 are now available! The original Darkwood, released eight years ago, is a top-down horror game made by indie developer Acid Wizard Studio. Though it didn’t become an instant hit, it gained popularity through recommendations and now has a “Very Positive” rating on Steam with almost 10,000 reviews. Interestingly, Darkwood 2 is being developed by Ice-Pick Lodge, the creators of the Pathologic series, while members of Acid Wizard Studio will still offer their expertise as consultants.
From what’s been revealed, Darkwood 2 will feel very familiar to fans of the first game. Like its predecessor, it’s a top-down survival horror experience where you’ll explore the dangerous Darkwood and fight off terrifying creatures. However, the story in Darkwood 2 will be self-contained, so you won’t need to have played the original game to enjoy it.
In Darkwood 2, you’ll navigate treacherous landscapes – from desolate deserts and dense swamps to open waters. The game challenges you to survive as locals struggle against an encroaching forest, forcing you to rely on your intelligence and courage. There are no helpful quest markers or waypoints; you’ll need to scavenge for supplies, build weapons for defense, and fortify shelters each night with barricades and traps to protect against a relentless enemy that can attack from anywhere.
Ice-Pick Lodge hasn’t announced a release date for Darkwood 2 yet, but they’re currently developing it only for PC. However, Xbox has confirmed the game will be available on Xbox Game Pass the day it launches.
