Cult PS1 Fighting Trilogy Battle Arena Toshinden Coming to PS5

If you grew up with the PS1, you’ll remember Battle Arena Toshinden.

Even if you didn’t own one of these fighting games, you probably remember seeing it in stores. It’s a well-known series from the original PlayStation days.

The game is being revived thanks to Edia, a Tokyo-based developer who has obtained the rights from its owner, Takara Tomy.

The company hasn’t revealed exactly which consoles will get these games, but they plan to release all three PlayStation 1 titles on current-generation systems, likely including the PS5. Importantly, this will be a separate initiative from any official emulation Sony might be working on.

Edia is known for doing a great job bringing classic games to new platforms. You can anticipate features that make the games easier to play today, and reliable performance overall.

The first Battle Arena Toshinden came out with the original PlayStation and was seen as a competitor to Virtua Fighter 2 on the SEGA Saturn.

While it was later surpassed by Tekken in the world of 3D fighting games on the PlayStation 1, this game still showed everyone a glimpse of the power and potential of Sony’s new console.

We’re excited to replay the trilogy, and Edia estimates it will be available again sometime between 2026 and 2027.

We’d love it if the developer added extra content, such as the manga and anime versions of the series, as rewards players can unlock.
