Cyberpunk 2077 Fans Shouldn’t Get Their Hopes Up in 2026

A sequel to the game Cyberpunk 2077 is officially in development, bringing players back to the futuristic Night City. CD Projekt Red, the game’s developer, has confirmed the project, previously known internally as “Project Orion,” is now in early stages of development. While a release date hasn’t been announced, the developers have shared some initial ideas about what the new game will offer, leaving fans eager for more information.

With Cyberpunk 2077 now available on Xbox Game Pass, it’s more accessible than ever on most modern gaming systems. The Phantom Liberty expansion adds a significant amount of new gameplay, potentially adding dozens or even hundreds of hours to the experience. However, as players jump into the improved and updated Cyberpunk 2077, they might be hoping for similar ongoing support for other games, like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which is also receiving new content this year.

CD Projekt Red Has No Plans For Cyberpunk 2077 In 2026

According to recent interactions with fans on their official X account, CD Projekt Red doesn’t currently plan to directly continue the story of Cyberpunk 2077. However, a sequel isn’t out of the question, and could continue the narrative after the events of the first game. Their new project, “Project Orion,” will be set in a different city inspired by Chicago, existing as a separate location alongside Night City.

CD Projekt Red has stated they don’t currently plan any new downloadable content or expansions for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. However, recent rumors suggest a surprise content update might arrive as late as September 2026. This update could range from a small set of quests linking the game to the upcoming Witcher 4, to a larger expansion comparable in size and quality to the popular Blood and Wine DLC. They’ve promised to share any updates if their plans change.

The success of Phantom Liberty sparked a lot of speculation about future downloadable content for Cyberpunk 2077. While the game had a rocky start, CD Projekt Red consistently released updates and improvements, culminating in the Phantom Liberty expansion. These changes have transformed Cyberpunk 2077 into a highly-regarded open-world RPG, and players are now eager for even more content.

Sequel Rumors Are Reportedly Far Off With The Witcher 4’s Development

Even if fans hoped to hear about more Cyberpunk 2077 content during news about The Witcher 3, a major obstacle would have stopped a new expansion from happening anyway. CD Projekt Red is currently focused on The Witcher 4, which is set to be their next big RPG and their most ambitious game yet. Creating a sequel that lives up to the success of The Witcher 3, which won Game of the Year when it launched, will be a significant challenge.

It’s no surprise the team is focusing on perfecting The Witcher 4, aiming for a release between 2027 and 2028, rather than revisiting Cyberpunk 2077. While they’re probably starting to plan ideas for a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, it won’t likely appear until 2028, 2029, or even 2030. Since there are no plans for new content or expansions for Night City, this long wait will likely disappoint fans who were so invested in the world and saw the game significantly improved over time.

Future Expansions & Updates Are Possible, But Incredibly Unlikely Following Plan Cancellations

As a big fan of Cyberpunk 2077, I’ve been digging into why the sequel looks so different, and it seems like a lot of it comes from DLC plans that never happened for the original game. Apparently, they were working on something called the “Moon” DLC – can you imagine?! It would have taken us to space, with cities built on the moon that the corporations were all over. Leaked images showed it would have been a huge expansion, almost like a whole new map, similar to how Dogtown worked in Phantom Liberty. It’s a shame it didn’t happen, but maybe some of those ideas made their way into the sequel!

While there’s a small chance this downloadable content could return if players strongly request more Cyberpunk 2077 material, it’s not very probable. Any lost content, including this DLC, might show up in the next Cyberpunk 2077 game, but probably not until after The Witcher 4 is released.
