Valve’s Steam Machine is designed to be affordable, competing with the cost of building your own PC. They’re also promising smooth performance – 4K resolution at 60 frames per second – using AMD’s FSR technology. While it’s still unclear if this will hold true for all games, titles like Cyberpunk 2077 seem likely to deliver on that promise.
Digital Foundry tested the device and found it could consistently run games at 1440p resolution with a smooth 60 frames per second, often using upscaling technology. However, turning on advanced visual effects like realistic sun shadows and reflections caused the frame rate to drop significantly to 30 FPS. While some games may be able to achieve 4K resolution at 60 FPS using FSR, it’s not expected to be possible for every game.
This is expected, as each game is optimized uniquely. Valve hasn’t shared any details on how the Steam Machine stacks up against current consoles. Digital Foundry estimates its performance is somewhere between the Xbox Series S and PlayStation 5, but generally closer to the PS5. However, the PlayStation 5 still seems to offer better overall performance.
The Steam Machine is expected to release in early 2026, along with the Steam Frame and a new Steam Controller. It will be interesting to see how these devices stack up against each other. Plus, Valve is aiming to make the purchasing process smoother this time around, which should be a relief for anyone who struggled to buy a Steam Deck.
