Dafne Keen’s Supernatural Horror Film Whistle Tops US Streaming Charts

I’ve been a fan of Dafne Keen ever since she blew me away as X-23 in Deadpool & Wolverine – she really broke out then! And now, she’s absolutely killing it in this new horror movie called Whistle that everyone’s streaming. It’s great to see her taking on such diverse roles and succeeding at them.

According to FlixPatrol, the horror movie Whistle is currently the most popular film on AMC+ in the United States. It’s also performing well internationally: it’s a hit on Catchplay in Indonesia, Chili in Poland, and Rakuten TV in both Ireland and the United Kingdom. Viewers in Guatemala, Australia, and New Zealand can rent or buy it on the Apple TV Store and Google Store.

What Is Whistle About?

Corin Hardy is the director behind the horror film The Nun, which is part of The Conjuring series. His new film, Whistle, features Dafne Keen as Chrys Willet, a new student at high school. Chrys inherits a locker that belonged to a popular athlete who died in a strange accident – bursting into flames.

Chrys discovers a peculiar whistle shaped like a skull in a locker. This whistle has a terrifying effect: it brings back the dead – or, as it’s ominously put, “summons your death.” The cast includes Ellie Gains, Percy Hynes White (from Wednesday), Michelle Fairley (Game of Thrones), Nick Frost (Three Flavours Cornetto), and other talented actors.

Whistle Received Mixed Reviews from Critics

Although Whistle is a popular supernatural horror film, critics had a mixed reaction to it. It currently has a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on reviews from critics. Viewers weren’t overwhelmingly impressed either, giving the film a 54% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.2/10 rating on IMDb.

Matt Glasby of Empire Magazine rated the film 3 out of 5 stars, calling it a straightforward horror movie with impact and suggesting it could launch a new series. Mike McCahill of The Guardian gave it a similar rating, stating it’s good for a weekend watch.

Several negative reviews pointed out that the film felt unoriginal and overly serious. Simon Abrams of RogerEbert.com suggested the movie would have been improved if its creators had leaned into its more violent tendencies. Similarly, Patrick Sproull from Little White Lies questioned why a film about a killer whistle would take itself so seriously.

Despite receiving mostly negative reviews, the Canadian horror film Whistle is now performing well on streaming platforms. Initially released in a limited capacity in the US, UK, and Ireland, the film is finding a wider audience online and could become a surprisingly successful sleeper hit.

Whistle is available to stream on AMC+ in the United States.
