The popular British crime series Dalgliesh is returning for another season, but viewers can expect a significant update to the show.
This series features Bertie Carvel (known from Doctor Foster) as the detective Commander Adam Dalgliesh. It’s based on the popular novels of the same name by the late author P.D. James.
As a long-time follower of the Dalgliesh mysteries, I’m thrilled to report that our favourite poet-detective will be back! Season three wrapped up in December 2024, and while we’ll all be eager for more, it looks like we’re going to have to be patient – the next installment isn’t due until 2027. Still, knowing more cases are coming is great news!
Acorn TV and New Pictures have confirmed that the popular detective series featuring Inspector Dalgliesh will be back, but it will no longer air on Channel 5 in the UK.
The fourth season of Dalgliesh will be available on the streaming service Acorn TV in the UK, the US, and Canada. We’ve contacted TopMob to find out more about Channel 5’s role in the show.
Elaine Pyke, co-founder and creative director of New Pictures and executive producer of Dalgliesh, expressed her excitement about continuing the series, praising both the writing of Helen Edmundson and the performance of Bertie Carvel.
As a crime drama fan, I have to say Acorn TV really hit the mark with ‘Dalgleish.’ According to Don Klees, their head of programming, it’s exactly the kind of gripping, character-focused mystery their viewers love, and they’re excited to bring it back. It’s clear Acorn TV knows its audience and delivers the quality crime drama they expect.
One reason for the big wait in-between seasons, of course, is just how in demand star Carvel is.

The acclaimed actor, known for winning Olivier and Tony Awards, will return as the unfaithful husband, Simon Foster, in a third season of the BBC One drama, Doctor Foster. The news was revealed late last year.
The new season of the show will bring back Carvel alongside Suranne Jones, who plays his former wife Gemma Foster, and Tom Taylor as their son, Tom. The story jumps forward nearly ten years after the previous season, which ended with Tom leaving home due to the difficult and strained relationship between his parents.
The third season of Doctor Foster will begin filming this spring. The show’s three main actors recently met to rehearse lines, and the new season will be available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
