Daniel Day-Lewis Says Brian Cox Has Drawn Him Into Jeremy Strong Feud

Daniel Day-Lewis isn’t quite following the thread of Brain Cox’s thoughts.

Daniel Day-Lewis is famous for his intense method acting – he even stayed in a wheelchair throughout the filming of his 1989 movie, My Left Foot. So, he was reportedly upset when a co-star of his in The Boxer mentioned him as contributing to the difficulties Jeremy Strong (Succession) had with a fellow actor’s performance.

Daniel Day-Lewis recently told The Big Issue that he once found himself unexpectedly involved in a disagreement with Brian Cox. He described Cox as a ‘very fine actor’ who has done ‘extraordinary work’.

The 68-year-old also said that because Cox is a highly regarded actor, he’s been given a platform to share his opinions, jokingly adding that the Deadwood star doesn’t seem willing to stop anytime soon.

Day-Lewis, acknowledging Brian Cox’s criticisms of method acting, has said he’s always open to discussing them. Cox, who is 79, can simply reach out whenever he wants to talk.

The conflict between the two actors began during their time working together on Succession. It was brought to light in a 2023 Variety interview where Cox criticized his on-screen son for overly imitating Daniel Day-Lewis’ acting style. Cox pointed out that this imitation stemmed from his son’s experience assisting Day-Lewis on the 2005 film The Ballad of Jack and Rose, and later acting alongside him in the 2012 film Lincoln.

But Day-Lewis takes issue with the idea that he was the reason for Strong’s acting style.

The award-winning actor said they would have been very upset if they had disrupted the other person’s work, but they don’t believe they did. They were surprised by the suggestion that they had interfered.

Daniel Day-Lewis stated that Jeremy Strong is a talented actor, but he doesn’t know about Strong’s acting process and doesn’t feel any connection to it.

Okay, so Brian Cox… he’s just so honest, and he’s totally spoken out about how much he can’t stand method acting. Honestly, it makes total sense to me! He’s seen how draining it is for actors, and he especially worries about someone like Jeremy Strong, who really goes there with his roles. It’s like, he’s genuinely concerned about the toll it takes on people, and I totally get why he feels that way!

He expressed concern about the emotional toll it takes on the performer, explaining to Seth Meyers in 2021 that constantly engaging with difficult material can be exhausting if you can’t create distance between yourself and the role.

He also criticized Daniel Day-Lewis, who had announced his retirement from acting before taking on his latest part in Anemone.

Brian Cox believes Daniel Day-Lewis retired at 55 because the intense dedication required for his roles became exhausting. He felt it was too all-consuming to continue that level of commitment daily, and he’s concerned about the toll it takes. However, Cox acknowledges that the results – specifically Jeremy Strong’s performances – are consistently exceptional.

In January 2024, Bobby addressed speculation about a disagreement with Tan, two months after announcing he was leaving Queer Eye after eight seasons. (Bobby is pictured second from left.)

Look, I want to set the record straight. Tan and I are doing okay, despite a personal issue we recently went through. It was a private matter between us, and honestly, it has absolutely no bearing on the show. There’s been a lot of speculation, so I want to be clear: it wasn’t anything romantic, just something personal that needed to be addressed.

In March 2024, Tan addressed claims that he tried to get his friend Jeremiah Brent to replace Bobby on the show Queer Eye.

Okay, so there’s been a lot of talk about a recent casting, and I wanted to clear things up. Netflix and the producers really went through a thorough audition process. I didn’t recommend my friend for the role, they actually landed it on their own merit – they were simply the best fit! And to be clear, I didn’t play any part in someone else being removed to make room for them. It was all about finding the right person for the job.

After years of speculation about a disagreement, Holly Marie Combs, Shannen Doherty’s former co-star on Charmed, revealed on her December 2023 podcast, Let’s Be Clear, that Alyssa Milano supposedly gave a show producer an ultimatum: choose her or Shannen. Combs claims this led to Shannen leaving the series in 2001.

Okay, so there’s been a lot of talk lately, and I wanted to address something directly. Back in February, I shared on Instagram that I never had the ability to influence anyone’s employment, and honestly, a lot of the stories circulating are about things that happened so long ago that I feel like people are changing the narrative. It’s just not an accurate retelling of what actually happened, in my opinion.

At a MegaCon Orlando panel, Shannen stated that, to her knowledge, the events as they remember them are accurately portrayed and there’s no attempt to rewrite history.

Shannen passed away in July 2024 after a yearslong battle with cancer.

During a September 2023 game of “Stir the Pot” with her daughter, Kelly Osbourne, on TopMob News, Sharon Osbourne described actor Danny Masterson—known for his role in “That ’70s Show”—as the rudest celebrity she’d ever encountered. She called him a “rude little boy” and a “dastardly little thing.”

He did not respond to her remarks publicly.

Five years ago, Sharon shared with Larry King that Ashton seemed annoyed when he was a guest on The Talk in 2014, after she mispronounced his name.

I remember this young guy asking me about my background and what I’d accomplished in the industry. Honestly, it was a little presumptuous! My immediate reaction was, ‘Listen, you have no idea who you’re talking to.’ I basically told him he was way out of his depth and I wasn’t going to tolerate that kind of attitude. It was a firm reminder that he didn’t know what he was up against!

In August 2022, Cassadee Pope and Maren Morris clashed with Brittany Aldean, the wife of country singer Jason Aldean, after Brittany posted a video on Instagram. In the video, she thanked her parents for not allowing her to transition genders during a phase where she preferred traditionally masculine interests, stating she enjoyed her current feminine lifestyle.

In a 2022 TikTok trend, JoJo Siwa called Candace Cameron Bure the “rudest” celebrity she’d met, explaining that Bure had once refused to pose for a picture with her at a red carpet event. Soon after, Cameron Bure apologized publicly, saying she regretted hurting Siwa’s feelings when she was eleven and acknowledging she should have taken the photo. She expressed sincere remorse, saying, “I feel crummy, I feel—JoJo, I’m so sorry.”

Candace and the other person resolved their differences. However, when asked months later if her network, Great American Family, would ever feature same-sex couples as the main characters in its holiday films, she stated it wouldn’t, explaining that the network would continue to focus on traditional marriage.

JoJo, who publicly shared they are part of the LGBTQ+ community in 2021, responded to the actress’ comment on Instagram, calling it “rude and hurtful to an entire community.”

In June 2021, Courtney Love claimed that Olivia Rodrigo had copied the album cover art of her band, Hole, for a promotional photo without proper credit. Olivia responded with a message of support, saying, “Love u and live through this sooooo much.” Courtney then playfully replied, “Olivia – you’re welcome. My favorite florist is in Notting Hill, London! DM me for details! I look forward to reading your note [winking face emoji].”

While on Watch What Happens Live, the Happy Days actor explained the reason for his difficult relationship with the Forrest Gump star during filming of the 1989 movie Turner & Hooch.

I directed the movie for thirteen days, and then Jeff Katzenberg, the producer, called me into his office and told me to pack up and go home, as I had everything I needed with me, he said.

Winkler and Hanks’ dog seemed to get along very well. “I really loved that dog,” Winkler said.

He also refused to admit if he’s even seen the flick.

“You know what you did!”

Anyone who watched The Hills likely remembers Lauren’s famous line from the start of season three. The drama between her and Heidi began when Heidi started dating Spencer Pratt, and it escalated when Lauren claimed Heidi and Spencer spread a false rumor about her and Jason Wahler making a sex tape.

Tyrese and Dwayne Johnson had another public disagreement after the release date for Fast & Furious 9 was delayed until April 2020. On the same day, a spin-off movie featuring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham was announced for 2019. Shortly after, Tyrese said he would leave Fast 9 if Dwayne Johnson was still part of the cast.

Tyrese recently discussed the long-standing conflict with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, telling Van Lathan on The Red Pill podcast that he still hasn’t spoken directly with Johnson, though they plan to. He did mention having a conversation with one of Johnson’s producing partners, but not with Johnson himself.

Tyrese admitted he shouldn’t have publicly shared frustrations he heard from others connected to the franchise. He explained he was the one who spoke out, and he takes responsibility for that, saying it wasn’t professional or a good look.

No more bad blood here.

Taylor Swift and Katy Perry had a long-running public disagreement, supposedly even fueling Swift’s song “Bad Blood.” The conflict, which began with issues over a dancer and rivalry during concert tours, was resolved when Perry sent Swift an olive branch as a peace offering before Swift’s Reputation Tour began.

Taylor shared in an Instagram video that she found a real olive branch in her dressing room, saying it meant a lot to her.

Taylor captioned the video, “Thank you Katy.”

For years, Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker, stars of Sex and the City, successfully dismissed rumors of a disagreement. However, those rumors resurfaced when Kim chose not to participate in a third movie and later made comments about her co-star that seemed critical.

During a September 2017 episode of Watch What Happens Live, Andy Cohen asked Sarah Jessica Parker how she felt about Kim Cattrall telling Piers Morgan that they had only ever been colleagues, not friends.

She was deeply upset, explaining she was “just heartbroken.” They had discussed it during the week, and she found it really disturbing because her memory of what happened was completely different.

It’s definitely been tough, but honestly, what I really believe is that what truly connected us was the shared journey we all took together. It started as a job, but after so many years, it became something much more personal – a huge part of our lives. I’m really hoping that those years, and the special connection we all made with the work, will ultimately be what people remember. It was such a privilege to be a part of something so meaningful and to connect with people through it.

And though they didn’t film scenes together, Kim did make a small appearance on And Just Like That.

Elton John and Madonna have been publicly disagreeing since 2004. The conflict began when Elton, while accepting an award, criticized Madonna’s live performances. He famously told the audience, “Madonna, best live act? That’s ridiculous!” He went on to say that lip-syncing shouldn’t be considered a live performance, and suggested performers who lip-sync during paid concerts shouldn’t be doing so.

The actress, formerly known for her role on Grey’s Anatomy, caused a disagreement with the show’s creator back in 2008 when she asked to be removed from Emmy Award consideration. She explained her decision by saying she didn’t believe the storylines she was given were strong enough to deserve a nomination.

Shonda Rhimes discussed Katherine Heigl’s departure in a 2012 interview with Oprah Winfrey on Oprah’s Next Chapter. She admitted it was a little hurtful, but not entirely unexpected. “When someone shows you their true colors, you should believe them,” Shonda explained. “I’ve really taken that to heart, and it’s been a valuable lesson for me.”

The fight between Nicki and Cardi at the Harper’s Bazaar Icon party during New York Fashion Week became a major news story. A month later, Cardi publicly explained what started the argument with Nicki.

Cardi B recently told W magazine that another person has been repeatedly criticizing her. They had talked twice before and seemed to resolve things, but the criticism continued.

The conflict truly escalated when Cardi B noticed Nicki Minaj had supposedly reacted to a tweet criticizing Cardi’s parenting, though Nicki claims she didn’t actually engage with it.

Cardi B explained she turned down a potentially hugely profitable Bruno Mars tour so she could be with her daughter. She emphasized how much she loves her daughter and considers herself a great mother. She also responded to criticism about where she encountered another artist, saying opportunities like that don’t come around often and she wasn’t going to wait for another chance meeting.

The conflict between Kanye West and Taylor Swift began in 2009 when he interrupted her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards. They later reconciled and became friends, but their relationship fell apart in 2016 after Kanye released his song “Famous,” which included a reference to Taylor.

As a bit of a pop culture observer, I found this fascinating! Back in February 2025, just before the Grammys, Kanye West did something really unexpected – he only followed Taylor Swift on Instagram. It was a pretty strong signal, and everyone was waiting for a reaction, but Taylor didn’t publicly acknowledge it. It definitely got people talking, though!

“I don’t know her.”

The supposed rivalry between Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez has been talked about for over 15 years. It began during an interview where Mariah was asked about other singers. When asked about Jennifer Lopez, she famously said, “I don’t know her.”
