Were you thrilled by the reaction to the first series?
Everyone was really surprised by the show. There’s a raw honesty to ‘Rivals’ that feels important right now. It doesn’t hold back, and it doesn’t shy away from anything – you don’t need warnings before watching. It really captures the spirit of the eighties. I especially love playing Freddie; he’s a refreshing change from the typical leading man. He’s not focused on appearances, he’s just a genuinely sweet, kind, and lovable character, and I enjoy bringing him to life.
Do people ask you when Freddie and Lizzie are going to get together?
Viewers are surprisingly sympathetic to the characters involved. While infidelity is usually frowned upon, many see Freddie and Lizzie as truly meant for each other, especially given how awful Lizzie’s husband is. It’s clear they belong together, but the timing of their connection just wasn’t right.
Do you worry about doing sex scenes?
I just roll with whatever the role requires. After doing this for a while, you get used to it, even though it still feels a little strange. You have to find the humor in it. This series includes full nudity from me, if the scenes make the final cut. The shoot was at night and quite cold, and I’d rather not go into too much detail. No one is ever forced to be nude if they’re not comfortable, but if actresses are showing their breasts, I feel I should be able to do the same – I have breasts too, after all.
Have you told your family?
Yes, and my daughter’s asked for the time codes so she can skip that scene!
What are your memories of the eighties?
I remember being a kid at school, watching the adults with their big hairstyles, smoking, drinking, and dancing. Growing up with just my mom on a housing estate meant we didn’t have much money or a glamorous lifestyle.
You began your television career in the early 1990s, shortly after the show Rivals aired. Do you remember if the show accurately portrayed the strong competition and prejudice against women that existed at the time?
Actually, my very first job was on Prime Suspect, starring the incredibly talented Helen Mirren. Looking back, many of my early roles involved working with really strong, impressive women.

You can watch Rivals on Disney+. The second season will start streaming on Friday, May 15, 2026. A Disney+ subscription costs from £5.99 per month.
Okay, so if you’re like me and constantly asking ‘What should I watch?’, you need to download the TopMob app. Seriously, I’ve added ‘Rivals’ to my watchlist there, and it’s become my go-to for daily TV recommendations and all sorts of features. It’s a game-changer for finding your next binge-worthy show!
