Daredevil: Born Again is Setting Up the Last Story I Ever Expected to See

The second season of Daredevil: Born Again is coming soon, and the promotional materials suggest it will be a surprisingly faithful adaptation of the classic comic book storyline within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Characters from the former Defenders series, which were previously cancelled on Netflix, are playing a larger role in the overall MCU, which is exciting. It looks like Born Again and another upcoming story, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, are building towards something much bigger than anticipated.

The upcoming season of Daredevil: Born Again will pick up the story right after the first season, centering on the conflict with Mayor Fisk. Daredevil is building a team of vigilantes to fight Fisk and his task force dedicated to stopping them, making this one of the most expansive and gritty stories the Marvel Cinematic Universe has told so far. But Daredevil’s future in the MCU might also involve more mystical elements.

The MCU Keeps Setting Up Elements Of Shadowland

Shadowland is a major Daredevil storyline from Marvel Comics, published in 2010. It centers around Matt Murdock taking control of the Hand, a ninja organization, and returning to his neighborhood, Hell’s Kitchen. He intends to use the Hand for positive change, but his increasingly harsh tactics lead other heroes to doubt his motives. As Matt continues to lead the Hand, his sense of right and wrong becomes blurred, and the immense power begins to change him.

While the ‘Shadowland’ storyline from the comics isn’t happening in the Marvel Cinematic Universe just yet, pieces of it are starting to appear. The upcoming third season of Born Again will feature Daredevil in his classic black suit. In the comics, Matt Murdock wore a similar black suit when he led the Hand, and it’s possible we’ll see him wear it for a while, potentially setting the stage for a future adaptation of ‘Shadowland’.

Plus, the Hand—a shadowy organization of ninjas—are returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They were previously featured as the main villains in the Netflix series Daredevil and the broader Defenders universe, but haven’t been seen since those shows ended. The initial trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day shows Spider-Man battling a version of the Hand that’s much closer to how they appear in the comic books, with several scenes featuring the group’s signature red ninja outfits.

Strong speculation suggests these events will impact future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, with the criminal organization known as the Hand possibly reappearing in season 3 of Born Again. This connects to rumors about the return of characters like Foggy Nelson and Elektra Natchios, as the Hand has the ability to resurrect people. This storyline could ultimately lead to Daredevil (Matt Murdock) taking control of the Hand, potentially setting up the ‘Shadowland’ story arc for either season 3 or a future season 4.

A key element of the first season of Born Again was Matt Murdock disappearing from public view, and previews for season two suggest this will happen again. The trailer and promotional clips have consistently shown the red Daredevil logo fading to black, mirroring the change in his costume. The “Shadowland” storyline, which explores a darker turn for Matt’s ethics, is a strong candidate for a future adaptation of the comic book arc.

Shadowland Could Be Marvel’s Street-Level Civil War

Similar to other Daredevil storylines, the upcoming Shadowland adaptation in the MCU will likely take some liberties with the original material. However, based on the events of season 2, it could become the MCU’s version of a smaller-scale Civil War. A particularly interesting development is Daredevil building his own team, and many fans believe this team will consist of the MCU’s street-level heroes. Jessica Jones and Swordsman are confirmed to join, and there’s speculation that Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Spider-Man might also become members.

If these characters continue to play a role in the story, we might see them witness Matt Murdock taking charge of the Hand. Just like in the ‘Shadowland’ storyline, some heroes could support Matt’s leadership, while others oppose it. This could happen again in season 3 of ‘Born Again,’ with some heroes staying loyal to Daredevil even after the Hand’s involvement, and others choosing to leave because of differing opinions.

Building on the current story with Mayor Fisk would be a great way to eventually adapt the ‘Shadowland’ arc. Just as Daredevil’s Army needed Mayor Fisk to happen, this fresh take on ‘Shadowland’ relies on the events involving Daredevil’s Army. Although there’s still much more story to unfold, this is one of the most promising directions for the future of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’.
