Daredevil: Born Again Officially Sets Up the Return of Marvel TV’s Nick Fury Replacement After 8 Years

The Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again has seen a major behind-the-scenes change. Initially planned as a fresh start, moving away from the darker style of the previous Netflix series, production was completely reworked during the first season. This change turned the show into a continuation of the original Daredevil storyline, which pleased many fans. The show now fully embraces the history of characters like Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), and has brought back familiar faces such as Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson). Now in its second season, the show is even more connected to the Defenders universe, recently bringing back Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter). While not all the original characters have returned yet, there’s a possibility more will appear soon.

Warning: Spoilers below for Daredevil: Born Again, Season 2, Episode 5, “The Grand Design”

I’m really hooked on Daredevil: Born Again! In the fourth episode, things got intense when Dex Poindexter tried to kill Fisk, but Daredevil stopped him. Dex got shot during the attempt, but he and Matt ended up on the run together. The fifth episode is all about them trying to stay ahead of the task force hunting vigilantes. It’s interesting because Matt, being the good person he is, feels like he needs to redeem himself for trying to kill Dex in the past, even though Dex seems to have accepted his fate. They have some really revealing conversations, and Matt even mentions knowing a nurse who could help them. That instantly made me think of Claire Temple! With the show bringing back so many familiar faces from the Defenders series, it feels like Claire’s return is definitely being set up – she was basically the Nick Fury of that whole universe, and I can’t wait to see her back in action.

How Claire Temple Stitched the Defenders Universe Together

I always loved how Claire Temple felt like the heart connecting everything in the early days of the Marvel shows on Netflix. It all started with Daredevil – I remember being so impressed when she found Matt, badly hurt, and chose to help him instead of calling the police. That moment really established her as this amazing, underground nurse for heroes who couldn’t go to a regular hospital. But it was when she showed up in Jessica Jones to help Luke Cage that things really clicked. Seeing her there made it clear that these weren’t just separate stories – they were all building toward something bigger, and Claire was the one thread tying it all together. She was the first sign we were getting a team-up, and I was so excited!

Before the heroes teamed up in The Defenders, Claire had already been a key character in Luke Cage and Iron Fist. In Luke Cage, her growing connection with Luke helped add emotional depth to the show. Then, in Iron Fist, training with Colleen Wing transformed her from someone who just watched events unfold to someone who actively fought against the Hand. By the time The Defenders began, Claire understood everyone’s abilities and personalities better than anyone else, effectively becoming the team’s strategist.

Similar to how Nick Fury brought together the Avengers, Claire Temple used her skills as a doctor and strong sense of right and wrong to connect very different people – a lawyer who couldn’t see, a hardened detective, an ex-convict, and a wealthy man dedicated to spiritual practice. Fans haven’t seen her on screen since 2018, and her absence has been felt in the more grounded stories of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The recent hint of her return in Daredevil: Born Again suggests that she’s finally being brought back into the main MCU storyline.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is currently available to stream on Disney+.

Will Claire Temple show up in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again episode, or will Marvel hold off on bringing her back until the show’s third season? Share your thoughts in the comments and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
