Daredevil is getting a fresh start! Starting in March, writer Stephanie Phillips (known for Planet She-Hulk) and artist Lee Garbett (Death of Doctor Strange) will be launching a new Daredevil #1 comic series. This promises an exciting new chapter for the beloved hero, as Matt Murdock faces new personal struggles and battles crime in Hell’s Kitchen. Just as things heat up, a dangerous new villain named Omen arrives with a personal grudge against Daredevil – and we’re getting an exclusive first look!
ComicBook is giving fans a first look at the creepy new villain, Omen, including a design reveal and a sneak peek from the first issue. They’re also showing off the cover for Daredevil #2, which features Omen’s mask and hints at the significant danger they pose. Writer Chip Zdarsky has suggested this threat is more personal for Matt Murdock than it is for Daredevil.
A New Era, A New Jumping Point, and a New, “Monstrous and Tragic” Villain

Daredevil is a classic Marvel hero with a long and beloved history. What was it like for you to play the role of Matt Murdock?
It was thrilling to finally share that we’re creating a new Daredevil book, but also a little nerve-wracking. Daredevil has incredibly loyal fans, and I felt a lot of pressure stepping into such a well-established story. What really helped me was focusing on the strong collaboration between myself, artist Lee Garbett, and colorist Frank D’Armata. We all genuinely love this story and are passionate about what we’re doing. Once I concentrated on our teamwork and the exciting story we wanted to tell, my anxiety transformed into pure motivation. Getting to work with such talented people on Daredevil is a dream come true!
This new Daredevil comic marks the start of a fresh direction for the character, and it’s designed to appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers. With Daredevil’s popularity boosted by the TV show, this series is a great place to jump in and discover the character. So, what can readers anticipate from this new run?
This is a perfect place for new readers to start, as we’re introducing a fresh direction for Matt. He’s taking on a new role as a law professor, which I’m really excited about, and that brings a whole new set of characters into the mix. While there’s a lot that’s new, we’re also keeping familiar faces – friends, villains, and other heroes – around. It’s a great combination of fresh ideas and the classic Daredevil stories that both Lee and I, as fans, have always loved.

Daredevil always faces tough obstacles, and we’re introducing a new villain named Omen. Can you give us a hint about what makes this new threat so dangerous?
Omen has a fantastic mask created by Lee, and he’s a compelling villain – a mix of monstrous power and deep sadness – which is a dynamic I really enjoy exploring against Daredevil. When we first see Daredevil, he’s very sure of himself as a vigilante, but Omen will push him in unexpected ways. Importantly, Omen’s conflict is more personal for Matt Murdock than it is about Daredevil’s heroic persona.
What did you enjoy most about working on the Daredevil series, and what aspects do you think viewers will find most appealing?
When I first pitched my Daredevil story to Marvel, the very first thing I suggested was making Matt Murdock a law professor. This immediately opens up a fresh setting with new characters and a compelling new challenge: balancing teaching with his life as Daredevil. Naturally, his vigilante world will start to overlap with his job, and I can’t wait for readers to see how he navigates that. I’m also really excited for you all to meet the new faces and unravel the mystery of Omen alongside us. And of course, I’m thrilled for everyone to experience Lee Garbett’s incredible artwork!
And just for fun: what’s your favorite Daredevil story?
While ‘Born Again’ is a common pick, it’s popular for good reason. I was also really affected by the run Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev did together. I especially love the noir aspects of that story, and Maleev’s artwork perfectly captured the atmosphere.
Daredevil’s New Villain Leans Into Prophecies — And His Design Backs That Up

Beyond Omen’s striking mask, Garbett detailed how his overall design emphasizes the idea of a villain who foresees the future. This creates a sense of mystery and intrigue, and he’s equipped with a really impressive weapon too.
According to Garbett, Omen is the first villain introduced in the series. He’s a shadowy figure cloaked in robes who relies on predictions to direct his actions. Garbett aimed to emphasize Omen’s prophetic appearance while ensuring he felt dangerous, not just peaceful or like a monk. The design of his staff – which includes a hooked blade – was inspired by a Lituus, a ceremonial staff used by Roman Augurs who interpreted omens.
Marvel’s new Daredevil #1 promises a thrilling start to a new era for the hero. While Matt Murdock tries to build a life for himself, his alter ego, Daredevil, finds himself the target of a dangerous new villain called Omen. But Omen isn’t what they seem, and Daredevil will have to uncover their true identity while navigating a completely different status quo. Get ready for a fresh and unprecedented take on the Man Without Fear!
