Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 8
The finale of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is a truly impactful moment within the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s more grounded stories. The episode features a significant confrontation between Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), and the way their rivalry concludes is surprising. Ultimately, Daredevil’s choices demonstrate why he’s considered one of the MCU’s best heroes.
The second season of Daredevil: Born Again heavily implied the conflict between Daredevil and Mayor Fisk could only be resolved by one of them killing the other. However, the season finale took a surprising turn, leaving both characters and the repercussions of their actions unresolved – a choice some viewers have criticized. Ultimately, Matt Murdock’s internal struggle with a difficult decision is likely central to what defines him as Daredevil.
The season 2 finale of Daredevil: Born Again clearly shows us what kind of hero Daredevil strives to be, solidifying his place as one of the very best heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ultimately, Matt Murdock will always prioritize justice, kindness, and compassion.
If You Have A Hard Time Accepting Daredevil Giving Kingpin Grace…That’s The Point
As a huge Daredevil fan, one scene from the Born Again finale really stuck with me. It’s the moment Matt Murdock, as Daredevil, steps in to protect…Wilson Fisk! The crowd was absolutely furious, ready to tear into Fisk at the courthouse, and it was shocking to see Daredevil put himself between them and The Kingpin. It was a seriously tense and unexpected moment.
As a huge fan of the Daredevil series, that final confrontation between Matt and Fisk always gets to me. It’s so raw – they’re literally fighting on the ground, and Matt somehow manages to talk Fisk into taking the plea deal. Basically, Fisk has to give up everything – his position as mayor, his American citizenship, and his life in New York. When Fisk asks if this is just payback, Matt hits him with this incredible line about it actually being grace. He wants them both to let the city finally have some peace, even if neither of them can find it for themselves. It’s a really powerful moment, showcasing Matt’s character and how he sees justice differently.
This scene is deeply emotional for both characters, but it’s especially important for Daredevil, revealing his true nature within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although Kingpin deserves severe consequences for his actions, Murdock chooses to offer forgiveness instead. This choice might be difficult for viewers to understand, and that’s intentional. Showing grace and mercy goes beyond simple fairness. Grace means offering kindness to someone who doesn’t deserve it, while mercy means withholding punishment someone does deserve.
Murdock makes the same offer to Fisk as he did to Bullseye earlier in Daredevil: Born Again season 2. But it wasn’t simple for Murdock either time, especially considering the risk of revealing his secret identity and the resulting imprisonment for Daredevil. This leads to a stark contrast in the final scenes: Fisk enjoys freedom while Murdock is behind bars, and this imbalance is deliberate.
This decision and the sacrifice Daredevil makes truly embody everything he’s stood for throughout the Netflix series, Daredevil. It highlights his strong faith, his commitment to justice rather than revenge, and the impact of Foggy Nelson, who also chose mercy even when hurt. All of these elements come together in this powerful moment.
The season 2 finale of Daredevil: Born Again shows how hard it is to be truly forgiving, but Daredevil extends that grace to Wilson Fisk anyway – and that’s intentional. The show wants viewers to question whether Fisk deserved it, because that internal struggle is central to the moral questions Matt Murdock faced all season. This complexity is precisely what makes Daredevil stand out as one of the MCU’s best heroes.
11 Years Later, Daredevil Is Well Overdue For A True Big-Screen MCU Debut
Following such a strong finale, it’s clear Daredevil should have a larger presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After eleven years, Matt Murdock has become one of Marvel’s most complex and captivating heroes on screen.
Despite appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home as Peter Parker’s lawyer, Charlie Cox’s Daredevil hasn’t yet had a major role alongside the main heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s time for that to happen.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’m really excited about what’s coming with Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the next Avengers movies. It feels like the perfect time to finally give Daredevil the big-screen treatment, and honestly, after watching the finale of Born Again season 2, I’m convinced he deserves it. The news about Punisher potentially being in Brand New Day is cool, but Daredevil, to me, feels like a more essential piece of the MCU puzzle. He really feels like one of the heroes who defines what the MCU can be.
All episodes of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 are now streaming on Disney+ from Marvel Studios.
