Dark Winds Season 4, Episode 3 Ending Explained: Why Irene Kissed Leaphorn

Be warned, this article reveals major plot points from season 4, episode 3 of Dark Winds. This week’s episode featured a surprising moment: Irene (Franka Potente) kissed Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon). As the season unfolds, it’s increasingly apparent that Irene is the primary antagonist. She’s already responsible for the deaths of Albert Gorman and Ashie Begay, and her recent interaction with Leaphorn was particularly erratic and disturbing.

This week’s episode of Dark Winds was packed with developments. Beyond Irene’s unexpected kiss with Leaphorn, the episode moved the story forward by sending the characters to Los Angeles, continuing the investigation into Chee’s mysterious illness, and creating tension between Chee and Leaphorn over Leaphorn’s plans to retire. It was a busy episode, and deserves a closer look at everything that happened.

Why Irene Kissed Leaphorn At The End Of Dark Winds Season 4, Episode 3

Okay, so at the end of episode 3 in Dark Winds season 4, things got intense. Irene cornered Joe after he’d finished up a run, basically holding him at gunpoint. She really pressured him to drop the case – the one about Albert Gorman’s death and finding Leroy. It was weird, because she also claimed to admire Navajo traditions and even Joe himself, but then she finished the whole thing by kissing him, and it definitely didn’t seem like he wanted it. It was a really unsettling scene.

Irene’s kiss came as a complete surprise. She’d intended to scare Joe into dropping his case, but instead, she ended up complimenting him and kissing him. The reason? Irene has a strong obsession with the Navajo people, and with Joe in particular. She repeatedly expressed her admiration for him – especially his skill with building things – and even went through his house while he was out.

Irene is clearly struggling with her mental health, and this is intensifying her obsession with Joe. She believes they have a deep, spiritual connection, seeing herself and Joe as opposing forces meant to be together. She idealizes Joe as the perfect Native American man and is fixated on Navajo traditions through him. It also seems she enjoys the chase, taking pleasure in both evading and being pursued by Joe.

Why Billie Is Going To Los Angeles & What Leaphorn, Chee, & Manuelito Will Do About It

A major development in this week’s episode was Billie Tsosie’s decision to travel to Los Angeles by herself. The episode clearly showed her reasons: with both Albert and Ashie Gorman now deceased, Leroy Gorman is her only remaining family member. Having already told Bernadette she doesn’t want to return to St. Catherine’s, Billie is going to Los Angeles to find Leroy and make a life with him.

The confusing part about Billie’s choice is how Leaphorn, Manuelito, and Chee will react. Bernadette made it clear the Navajo Tribal Police can’t operate in Los Angeles and don’t have the resources for an investigation anyway. But they can’t simply abandon the search for Billie and Leroy, meaning the three officers will likely have to investigate unofficially.

Chee Found Out About Joe Retiring & Confronted Him

Joe’s attempt to keep his retirement a secret from Chee didn’t go as planned this week. Bernadette eventually revealed to Chee that Joe was retiring and wanted her to take over as lieutenant. Chee reacted poorly, just as many predicted. While he was upset that Bernadette had kept the secret and lied to him, his anger stemmed from more than just that.

Chee was upset when he spoke with Joe, mainly because Joe hadn’t been upfront with him about retiring and instead promoted Bernadette over him. Chee pointed out that Joe was using company rules as an excuse to be dishonest, which felt hypocritical. Joe had never prioritized those rules before, and Chee himself had even bent them in the past to help Joe out.

Chee was upset that Joe chose Bernadette to take his place. In season 3 of Dark Winds, Bernadette happily transferred to Border Patrol, while Chee remained with the NTP. Chee has proven himself a capable leader and a decisive decision-maker on numerous occasions, leading him to believe he was more qualified for the position than Bernadette. Joe’s decision to not inform him about the replacement only added to his frustration.

What Is Happening To Chee & Is It Real?

In the third episode of Dark Winds season 4, Chee experienced some disturbing visions. He had a nosebleed while at work and later a tooth fell out in his car. These events are connected to “ghost sickness,” which Chee developed after entering the death hogan at the end of the second episode of season 4.

It’s unclear if the strange things happening to Chee are actually real, or if he’s experiencing illusions. The show Dark Winds has previously explored both traditional Navajo healing and the power of the mind, as seen with the Ye’iitsoh storyline in season 3. Chee has been good at concealing his struggles, making it hard to know what’s truly going on. For now, we’ll have to wait and see if Dark Winds reveals whether his illness is genuine or a product of his imagination.
