A new trailer has dropped for Maul – Shadow Lord, an animated series that takes place during the dark years of the Empire. While the Star Wars story is usually told from the heroes’ side, fans have been eager to see a story focused on the villains. This series promises to deliver just that.
Lucasfilm just released a new trailer for Maul – Shadow Lord, and it looks packed with intense action. The trailer also reveals a surprising twist: Darth Maul will be joining forces with Jedi who survived the infamous Order 66. This unexpected alliance shows the far-reaching consequences of Palpatine’s rise to power and what it means for Maul’s future.
Darth Maul’s Incredible Character Arc Continues

Even the creator of Star Wars, George Lucas, admitted he regretted killing off Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace. He brought the character back in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, explaining that Maul secretly survived his duel on Naboo and was actually Palpatine’s apprentice. Maul became a powerful figure during the Clone Wars, eventually challenging Palpatine himself. Though things didn’t go his way, Maul managed to survive the devastating Order 66 and spent years rebuilding his criminal organization. The story continues in Maul – Shadow Lord, where a determined Maul seeks revenge against the master who betrayed him.
It’s unexpected, but Maul is trying to team up with Jedi who managed to survive Order 66. A key figure in this is Devon Izara, a Twi’lek Padawan who has to choose whether to join forces with Maul. Her character seems inspired by Darth Talon, a Sith Lord George Lucas originally wanted to be Maul’s apprentice in a future Star Wars trilogy. Now, the series is incorporating those old ideas into the current storyline. The previous trailer showed Maul taking on a mentor role and teaching the Sith Code, suggesting Izara will likely turn to the dark side.
The latest trailer hints at the bigger picture of Darth Maul’s story. As seen in Star Wars Rebels, Maul eventually convinces himself that his quest for revenge is actually what the Jedi want – to take down Palpatine. Despite his elaborate plans, everything ultimately leads to a final showdown with Obi-Wan Kenobi, where he’s finally defeated. He believes Obi-Wan is shielding the true Chosen One, Luke Skywalker, and that through Luke, both he and Kenobi will ultimately receive justice.
