David Cross Details “S–tty” Experience on Alvin and the Chipmunks 3

David Cross allegedly had a nutty experience before wrapping Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Jason Cross, who played the chipmunks’ manager Ian in the first two Alvin and the Chipmunks movies (2007 and 2009), described the making of the third film, Chipwrecked (2011), as a very negative experience.

He said the only difficult experience he had was with the third film, which he had to do because of his contract. He described the people involved as being unpleasant to him from the very beginning, speaking on the April 17th episode of The Daily Beast’s Obsessed podcast.

The man, 62 years old, said the biggest problem was the short notice he received about appearing in the third movie. He was told around Christmas that he needed to be in Hawaii by January 3rd to begin filming.

“They were like, ‘If you’re not there, they will sue you,'” he said. “It was so crazy.”

Things continued to deteriorate. He said they intentionally did unpleasant things, like giving him a leaky, rundown trailer. It was just a series of frustrating issues like that.

That’s why Cross doesn’t want to make another Chipmunks movie or work with anyone involved in the original, stating he’d “never work with any of those people again.”

Although Jason Bateman (known from Arrested Development) appeared in the live-action parts of the movies, Justin Long, Jesse McCartney, and Matthew Gray Gubler provided the voices for the singing chipmunks Alvin, Theodore, and Simon, respectively.

As Cross put it, “I think I contributed quite a bit to this billion dollar franchise.”

TopMob News has contacted 20th Century Fox for a response to the claims, but they haven’t received one yet.

Ten years after initially sharing his story, Cross made it clear he doesn’t blame producers Ross Bagdasarian and Janice Karman – the son and daughter-in-law of Alvin and the Chipmunks’ original creator, Dave Bagdasarian – for what happened.

In a 2012 Facebook post, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, he wrote about Janice and Ross, saying they were consistently kind, generous, and considerate towards him. He recalled their support from the very beginning of filming the first movie through the completion of the third, and specifically remembered how they went above and beyond during the making of Chipwrecked. Knowing he was being treated poorly, they made a daily effort to ensure he was comfortable and understood his difficult situation.

Cross, who mentioned a disagreement with one producer he didn’t name, also expressed his admiration for Karman and Bagdasarian, praising their positive attitude and kindness. He said he couldn’t picture them ever treating anyone badly.
