David Tennant will once again be the Doctor! He’s set to return to Doctor Who in the summer of 2027 for 15 brand-new audio adventures produced by Big Finish. As a huge fan himself, Tennant has repeatedly expressed his love for the role, which is why he’s revisited it – both by reprising his original run as the Doctor and playing a version of the character on screen as the Fourteenth Doctor. Now, Big Finish has officially announced he’ll be stepping back into the role of the Tenth Doctor.
Okay, so I’m incredibly excited – David Tennant is coming back as the Tenth Doctor! Big Finish Productions is creating 15 new audio adventures, each about an hour long, and honestly, it sounds amazing. Tennant himself joked that working with Big Finish is too easy – you just show up, have fun, and somehow end up saving the universe again! The first 12 episodes will be rolling out every other month starting in the summer of 2027. And get this – the final three are going to be a special box set where the Tenth Doctor actually teams up with some of his other selves. Seriously, what’s not to love?
David Tennant’s Legacy Continues to Grow

Nicholas Briggs, creative director at Big Finish, said they were thrilled to have David Tennant back. Tennant is a very popular and busy actor, but Big Finish is always prepared with new stories for him. They’re enjoying working with him again and promise the new audio dramas will be a wild ride – fast-paced, funny, and scary, with surprises right from the start. Given Tennant’s experience with audio dramas, these episodes are expected to be particularly exciting.
David Tennant’s enduring popularity and love for Doctor Who ensure he remains a beloved figure in the show’s history. He first revisited the role in the 50th anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor,” alongside Matt Smith and John Hurt. His return for the 60th anniversary came about thanks to online “watchalongs” hosted by Emily Cook of Doctor Who Magazine during the pandemic. These events sparked conversations between Tennant, Catherine Tate, and showrunner Russell T. Davies, ultimately leading to his reappearance.
What really makes Big Finish stand out are its stories featuring multiple Doctors. These adventures are a great way to see classic and modern Doctors team up, and it would be especially fun to see David Tennant work with Peter Davison again – he played the Fifth Doctor and is Tennant’s father-in-law. That collection of multi-Doctor stories sounds amazing!
