Dax Shepard & Kristen Bell’s Kids React to Their Breakup in Hit & Run

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard‘s children had a strong reaction when they saw their parents arguing on screen – they didn’t like it at all! It even led to the kids choosing sides.

Dax said his daughters, 12-year-old Lincoln and 10-year-old Delta, all agreed on how the characters’ breakup was portrayed in the 2012 film Hit & Run. The movie is inspired by Dax and his partner’s own relationship.

The actor, who starred in Idiocracy, explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on November 25th that his parents were really angry about something. He was relieved they were upset with his mother, not him. Apparently, they felt his mother was mean, but saw his father as a good person who had made mistakes, and believed she should forgive him – a view he shared.

But ultimately, Dax said, Lincoln and Delta enjoyed Hit & Run.

We put a lot of work into making this film, and my father actually wrote and directed it. When some people asked to see it, we realized it had been a long time since we’d watched it ourselves. So we watched it with them, and they really enjoyed it. It’s a pretty edgy film, and it was a good way to gauge how our kids would react to mature content.

Their daughters enjoyed watching their parents appear youthful and happy together, but they didn’t like the arguments and disagreements the movie showed between them.

The couple’s onscreen breakup, Dax said, made Lincoln and Delta “very upset.”

Dax shared that his daughters, Lincoln, 12, and Delta, 10, recently watched his 2012 film, Hit & Run, and they had strong feelings about the breakup of his and his wife’s characters in the movie.

You know, I was on Jimmy Kimmel Live! the other day with Kristen, and we were talking about how my parents reacted to our relationship. Honestly, it was such a relief to hear they were upset with her, not with me! They basically thought my mom was being unreasonable and that my dad, despite some things in his past, deserved a second chance. And I totally agreed with them – it was a really validating moment.

You know, my kids, Lincoln and Delta, had a little bit of a different take on the movie than I did – they definitely questioned some of my character’s choices! But thankfully, things work out between my character and Dax’s, and in the end, they both really enjoyed it. It’s always fun when the whole family can watch something together, even if we don’t agree on everything happening on screen!

Dax explained that after spending a lot of time making their independent film – which his father wrote and directed – his family asked to see it. They hadn’t watched it in ages, so they agreed to watch it together. His family really enjoyed it, even though Dax admitted it contained some inappropriate content. He said it was a good way to gauge how their children were developing.

Dax and Kristen, who have been married since 2013, experienced a difficult time in their relationship years before starring in a movie about a similar situation. They previously shared that they briefly split up just three months after they started dating in 2007.

Oh my god, I knew I was totally head over heels for him, but he was being so cautious because he was still seeing other people, apparently. He actually had to sit me down and tell me, like, ‘I just can’t do this right now.’ He did say he thought I was amazing, which, yes, I already knew! But he was still dating around, can you believe it?

Four days later, Dax had a change of heart.

Honestly, it was so confusing. He called me out of the blue, practically admitting he’d made a mistake. He’d been seeing someone else, but he said I was more interesting and he didn’t know what he was doing with his life. So, he came back, which was… a lot. Even now, though, I always make sure he remembers how much it hurt when he ended things with me in the first place. It’s important to me that he understands the impact he had.

You know, after all this time, what I really admire about these two is their dedication. They consistently work on their relationship – it’s not something they take for granted. They understand a strong connection requires effort, and they’re clearly committed to putting that in, year after year.

I was really struck by something Kristen said on Andy Cohen’s show recently. She talked about how, when you’re looking for ‘the one,’ it’s not just about finding someone who fits you. You also have to be willing to shape yourself to fit with them. She explained it like a puzzle – it’s about finding someone you can build a life with, which means constant compromise, but a compromise that actually feels good for both of you. It’s such a healthy way to look at relationships!

Things will have their ups and downs, but we won’t need to constantly monitor and correct each other,” the Veronica Mars actor explained. “We’ll understand that we’re not opponents, but rather a team facing challenges together.

In September 2025, Kristen shared a heartwarming look at her family’s close relationship while celebrating Dax’s milestone anniversary of staying sober.

She shared what reaching 21 years of sobriety means to her: lots of love and connection. “I’m hugging everyone and everything, embracing life!” she wrote. She expressed deep gratitude to Dax Shepard for his sobriety, saying they all are incredibly thankful to have him.
