The much-awaited Red Hood series by DC Comics was abruptly halted on its launch day, as a result of controversial comments made by the writer, Gretchen Felker-Martin, on social media. Consequently, she also lost access to her Bluesky account.
In response, DC distributed a statement to merchants later on in the day. This statement revealed the termination of the Red Hood series, which had previously arranged for a second and third issue. Additionally, the publisher provided a credit for all billed copies of the initial issue that remained unsold.
Why is DC canceling Red Hood?
Upon being asked about the reasons for the cancellations, DC Comics issued this statement: “At DC Comics, we deeply respect our creators and audience, and we believe in fostering a peaceful environment that encourages individual opinions. Statements or public posts that may foster hostility or violence contradict DC’s code of conduct.
On more than one occasion, DC Comics has terminated series because of inappropriate conduct or comments made by creators. For instance, in 2018, they discontinued Border Town following accusations against writer Eric M. Esquivel regarding sexual, physical, and emotional abuse of a former partner. Similarly, this year, DC cancelled the reprint edition of The Sandman #8’s special facsimile due to allegations of sexual misconduct against author Neil Gaiman.
It’s truly regrettable that the Red Hood series has been discontinued for various reasons. Beyond any other considerations, it’s unfortunate that the dedicated art team behind it have found themselves out of work through no fault of their own. The book had received positive feedback, even at SuperHeroHype. Yet, given the circumstances, DC’s decision to cancel the series instead of bringing on a new writer to continue from the first issue seems reasonable.
