DC Comics’ Plan for Absolute Lex Luthor Explored Even More

A major foe of Superman is now causing trouble for everyone in the DC Universe.

In the latest issue of Absolute Superman #16, written by Jason Aaron with art by Juan Ferreyra and Becca Carey, Superman faces off against both the Parasite and a brutal Hawkman. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor has a quiet day at home, chatting with a surprising guest. However, when Luthor refuses to cooperate with Brainiac’s plans, Brainiac quickly reveals his true nature and threatens everyone Lex cares about.

DC Comics’ upcoming Absolute Superman #16 continues the story from Absolute Evil #1. Superman is stepping into a leading role in a new era of heroes, but he discovers he wasn’t the first superhero. Hawkman appears to offer Superman some advice – even if Superman doesn’t ask for it!

Most versions of Lex Luthor are known as classic supervillains, ever since his first appearance in 1940’s Action Comics #23, “Superman: Europe at War (Part II).” However, the Lex Luthor from the Absolute Universe is a unique case. Unlike the power-hungry villains we’re used to, this Lex is happy living a peaceful, simple life with his family.

The story, created by Al Ewing, Giuseppe Camuncoli, and Stefano Nesi, features a dark version of the Justice League from another universe. Even with villains like Hector Hammond, Ra’s al Ghul, Veronica Cale, Elenore Thawne, and the Joker on its roster, Brainiac felt the team needed something more and began hunting for Lex Luthor.

What To Expect From The Future of Absolute Superman

Beyond what’s already planned for Lex in the main storyline, several other well-known characters are expected to appear. Earlier this year, the writer of Absolute Superman, Jason Aaron, hinted that General Zod and Supergirl might be included in future issues.

As many people and objects are known to have survived Krypton’s destruction, we’re intentionally leading the audience to wonder if Superman was the only survivor, Aaron revealed. He wouldn’t confirm or deny the possibility of other Kryptonians like Supergirl or Zod existing, or whether others escaped from the Phantom Zone. He did point to issue 15, where Brainiac collected numerous bottled cities, as a hint that more survivors could be out there.

Aaron explained that they initially believed one of the bottles contained a Kryptonian city, but that wasn’t the case. He said Superman is desperately searching for anything that connects him to his lost home planet, especially after losing Sol, which was his last link to Krypton. He went to a promising location hoping to find something, but was disappointed. Aaron didn’t have any further details to share at that time.

Absolute Superman #16 from DC Comics is on sale now.
