It’s been confirmed that three eagerly awaited DC Studios projects won’t be part of the main DC Universe timeline. Instead, they’ll be set within their own distinct worlds, akin to alternate realities or Elseworld tales. The first of these was officially launched with the creation of ‘Creature Commandos’, while ‘Superman’ is finding its place in this new interconnected lineup. Though projects within the DC Universe will stick to a consistent narrative, these standalone stories won’t be connected to each other or the main storyline.
Since Jim Lee assumed control over DC’s creative leadership in 2022 and presented the initial lineup of Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters ventures in 2023, there has been much discussion about how the new DC Universe continuity operates.
In my perspective, although I’ve always regarded Superman as the rock-solid base of this universe, the shift hasn’t been a simple separation from the DCEU. This is particularly noticeable with Peacemaker Season 2, set to premiere on HBO Max on August 21. It preserves certain aspects from Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker Season 1 as official lore, while discarding other past narratives, which has left fans, including myself, with a somewhat perplexing mix of continuity.
Others suggest that starting anew might have provided more clarity, yet this option would have ended the ongoing narrative of “Peacemaker” unless it was set in a separate timeline continuation.
Discussing different realms, it has been confirmed that three forthcoming DC projects will not be part of the main DC universe.
The Batman Part II
As stated on DC’s official site, Matt Reeves’ “The Batman Part II” is among the films actively being made and does not take place within the interconnected DC Universe, according to current plans.
In 2027, you can expect the release of the sequel to “The Batman,” which was introduced in 2022. This follow-up will further explore the dark, film noir-style Gotham city, with Robert Pattinson once again playing the lead role as Batman. Production for this movie is slated to begin in 2026.
The persistent categorization of these productions under the Elseworlds banner has led to considerable discussion among fans. Some advocates appreciate Reeves’ grittier, realistic style staying distinct from Gunn’s DC Universe, whereas others hope that Pattinson’s Batman might eventually join forces with David Corenswet’s latest Superman character.
According to Gunn, he has thought about combining the two worlds, but at present, they are intended to remain separate entities. DC’s statement indicating that the article’s views might not necessarily align with future decisions subtly hints at a potential opportunity for these universes to intersect in the future.
Simultaneously, Gunn is crafting a Batman movie for DCU titled “The Brave and the Bold”. In this upcoming film, Bruce Wayne will appear with his assassin-trained son Damian Wayne, who will take on the role of Robin. This marks the first time in over 30 years that Robin will feature on the big screen, and it establishes Batman’s presence alongside Superman within the Justice League.
Starfire
The forthcoming animated series titled Starfire will exist independently from the main continuity within the DCU. Although specific plot points have yet to be disclosed, Gunn has made it clear that many of the DC animated family shows function within their own universes. This setup allows for greater creative liberty without being bound by ongoing live-action narratives.
In other words, the show will exclusively delve into Starfire’s persona and her escapades, not necessarily tying in with the happenings from the latest DC Universe movies or television programs.
The series, titled Starfire, focuses on the beloved Teen Titans character. Josie Campbell takes on the role of executive producer, while Brianne Drouhard serves as co-executive producer.
My Adventures with Green Lantern
Another exciting animated venture, titled “My Adventures with Green Lantern“, has been confirmed to stand apart from the current DC Universe (DCU). However, just because it’s not part of the new DCU, that doesn’t mean it won’t be set in a shared universe.
In my new story, “Journeys with Green Lantern,” the events will align with the popular animated series, “Journeys with Superman.” This series has established its unique and independent animated realm all on its own.
The jointly-used animated sequence offers chances for both series to intertwine, yet it maintains a self-contained narrative separate from Gunn’s broader DC Universe tale. This independence provides the creative team with ample room to invent innovative renditions of the Green Lantern lore.
The acclaim for Green Lantern continues to increase, as there are six confirmed roles scheduled for him in upcoming films and series. Some of these productions will take place within the DC Universe, while others will be set in alternate timeframes. This explosion of content signifies a significant revival for the well-known space hero after Nathan Fillion’s portrayal of the character (Guy Gardner) reappeared on the big screen in Superman.
