While the Infinity Gauntlet is famous in Marvel, DC Comics has a similarly powerful and dangerous cosmic artifact at the center of a long-running story. Over the past few years, this epic tale of power, loss, and devastation has been building across multiple comic book series, creating some of the most potent objects in the DC Universe. Superman is key to stopping a catastrophic new era of darkness if anyone dares to unleash it.
Phillip Kennedy Johnson is the writer behind this ongoing story, which began with hints in his Action Comics run during the “Warworld Saga.” It centers around the ancient being Olgrun and his seven different forms, or ‘aspects,’ which have since appeared in Green Lantern: War Journal and now Adventures of Superman: Book of El. The story explores who Olgrun is, what these aspects are, and the potential consequences of bringing them all together – a scenario reminiscent of Thanos collecting the Infinity Stones.
A Mad, Old God Created DC’s Version of the Infinity Stones

While trapped on Warworld in Action Comics, Superman learned about Olgrun, a legendary and incredibly powerful Old God. Olgrun went insane after his daughter died – a tragedy he himself caused. The other gods couldn’t kill him, so they split him into seven separate parts, each embodying a different one of his powers. On Warworld, Superman found one of these parts – the Fire of Olgrun – and used it to bring his adopted son, Osul-Ra, back to life.
The story of Olgrun continued in Green Lantern: War Journal, revealing he hadn’t been completely destroyed. Fragments of the god lived on in another dimension and attempted to possess John Stewart. Luckily, Stewart discovered another piece of Olgrun – a ring embodying his will – and used it to imprison Olgrun and his army. But the real danger wasn’t Olgrun himself, but the remaining fragments of his being, which someone from Superman’s history was after.
In the current Adventures of Superman: Book of El series, a character from Superman’s past, Kryl-Ux, has returned. Kryl-Ux was a warrior Superman was once imprisoned with, and he’s now gained significant power by obtaining the Spark of Olgrun, giving him control over time and space. He intends to use this power to reshape the DC Universe, believing he can improve it. However, the power is already beginning to corrupt him, mirroring the influence of the ancient being the power originally belonged to.
Only Superman’s Family Can Stop Olgrun’s Power from Destroying Everything

The risks of reuniting the pieces of Olgrun are unknown, but Kryl-Ux warned Superman about a prophecy concerning them. If someone worthy combines these pieces, a great hero will be born. However, if someone unworthy does, Olgrun will return and destroy the DC Universe, bringing eternal darkness. Unfortunately, Kryl-Ux believes he is destined to be the hero of the prophecy, not simply the one who facilitates Olgrun’s return to power.
The pieces of Olgrun are even more dangerous than the Infinity Gauntlet. Each fragment holds a part of a crazed god, and collecting them all could cause a universe-ending disaster. The situation is escalating in Adventures of Superman: Book of El, as Kryl-Ux is gathering more of these fragments. Superman is confronting a massive threat, and if he doesn’t intervene quickly, everything will be lost.
The Olgrun storyline has been developing for years in Johnson’s comics, and it’s finally coming to a head. Now that we understand the different facets of the story and what happens when these characters reunite, Book of El – which is meant to conclude this major arc – feels even more impactful. The big question is: can Superman stop Kryl-Ux before it’s too late? Or will Olgrun make a comeback, forcing Superman to battle the most powerful god in the DC Universe? We’ll have to wait and see.
