DC Just Settled The Absolute Universe’s Most Important Character

In DC Comics’ new Absolute Universe, one character is secretly more crucial than you might expect. Over the past year, this series has revealed a grim world where villains and injustice rule, and how that’s changed familiar heroes. But things are beginning to change within the Absolute Universe, and even against all odds, heroes are starting to emerge and become more prominent.

As a huge fan of this universe, I’ve been blown away by the characters we’ve met – Wonder Woman bravely facing off against powerful, corrupt forces, and Martian Manhunter/John Jones battling the insidious spread of harmful ideologies. It feels like these Absolute heroes are really starting to make a difference, and things might finally be shifting in a positive direction. But honestly? There’s one hero who I think is even more crucial than anyone realizes – even us fans. They could genuinely be the one who saves this whole universe… or accidentally destroys it. It’s a lot of pressure, and I’m completely hooked to see how it plays out.

Absolute Flash’s Powers Come From Something Darker Than the Speed Force

Many readers likely anticipated heroes like Absolute Superman or Absolute Wonder Woman taking center stage, but surprisingly, Absolute Flash has positioned Wally West as the key figure in this new universe. In this reality, Wally gained his powers through an experiment linked to a mysterious initiative called Project Olympus, which remained unexplained for almost a year. The truth about Project Olympus was finally revealed in Absolute Flash #8 by Jeff Lemire and Travis Moore: it was based on Project Blue Trinity, spearheaded by the villainous Absolute Eobard Thawne.

Eobard Thawne descended into madness, convinced he was hearing a voice from a dimension made of pure energy. He briefly connected with this other world before being consumed by it. Years later, his granddaughter, Elenore Thawne, launched Project Olympus to finish his research. This project unexpectedly gave Wally West incredible speed, making him one of the fastest people on Earth. However, according to writer Jeff Lemire, Wally’s powers don’t come from the Speed Force – the usual source of the Flash’s abilities.

A recent issue of Absolute Flash #9 by Lemire and Nick Robles offers a fresh perspective on Wally West’s powers. While traveling with the Rogues, Wally detects a strange red energy that’s visible only to him. When he touches it, he starts seeing past versions of himself, and the energy quickly intensifies, causing time to seemingly pile up around him. It seems likely this energy is the Speed Force, but if not, it could potentially be connected to Darkseid’s Omega Effect.

Absolute Flash is Tapping into Darkseid’s Power Source

It’s a bit of a stretch, but consider this: evidence shows Darkseid’s power is woven into the very fabric of the Absolute Universe – the discovery of the Omega Particle in Absolute Evil #1 proves it. Thawne reported hearing a voice within this realm of living energy, and we know Darkseid existed there for countless ages. What Thawne, and later his granddaughter, encountered wasn’t another dimension, but a living extension of Darkseid’s Omega energy itself.

I believe there’s a connection between Wally’s powers and Darkseid. Have you noticed the red trails Wally leaves when he uses his speed? They look a lot like Darkseid’s Omega Beams. Remember when Batman was hit by those beams in Final Crisis and traveled through time? Wally’s been experiencing time distortions lately, which could be explained by a connection to Darkseid’s Omega Energy. Plus, Wally saw the hand of creation in Absolute Flash #5, and who created that universe? Darkseid did. This all suggests a link between Wally and Darkseid’s power.

As a movie critic, I’m really intrigued by the potential connection between Absolute Flash and Darkseid. It makes sense, honestly – Flashes are always central figures when we’re talking about the wider multiverse. If Wally West is truly linked to Darkseid’s Omega Energy, though, he’s walking a tightrope. On one hand, that kind of power could let him reshape the world for the better. But Omega Energy is seriously dangerous stuff, and it could just as easily overwhelm and corrupt him. It’s a fascinating setup with huge stakes, and I’m eager to see where this goes.

The Flash is a remarkably powerful hero, and the recent storyline exploring him drawing power from Omega Energy instead of the Speed Force is a compelling idea, particularly if that energy could be used for positive purposes. Given Wally’s struggles throughout the ‘Absolute Flash’ event, it makes sense that the power within him might be a corrupted form of Darkseid’s energy. It’s unclear where the story will go from here, but considering everything the Flash has endured, he’s almost certainly going to be a central figure in the future of this universe.
