The highly anticipated superhero film, Supergirl, arrives in theaters on June 26th, and early previews suggest it will be a massive hit. Supergirl has long been a significant, yet often overlooked, part of the Superman story, and she’s finally getting the attention she deserves. To celebrate, DC is launching “Summer of Supergirl,” featuring the character prominently in comics over the next few months. As part of this push, DC has given Supergirl a fresh new design.
In Supergirl #14 (2025), we see Supergirl at her weakest – injured, without her powers, and needing technology to stay alive. But as often happens with superheroes, she overcomes these challenges. In fact, she does so in a big way, debuting a new costume that’s immediately striking and memorable – one I hope we see a lot more of! Let’s dive into what makes this costume so significant.
Super-Substance Plus Heroism Equals the Perfect Comeback

Black Flame has seized control of Kandor, the bottled city, and is using a powerful ring that steals energy from the sun – originally belonging to Supergirl – to maintain her power. She defeated Supergirl, and even advanced Kryptonian technology couldn’t fully restore her strength. Luckily, Kara convinced her former friend Lesla-Lar to help, and Lesla’s robotic helpers saved Lena Luthor. Lena then combined Lesla’s unique Super-Substance with her own inventions, creating a special suit that would give Kara the power she needed to fight back, even within Kandor’s challenging atmosphere.
The strange substance transformed into a stunning blue, white, and gold costume, instantly healing Supergirl and removing the cybernetic implants that had been affecting her. Beyond just restoring her powers and giving her a fantastic new look, the suit has incredible abilities. It reacts to her thoughts, allowing her to reshape it into anything she needs – from a shield strong enough to deflect heat vision to blades capable of piercing even a powerful Kryptonian. While this suit significantly enhances her abilities, its appearance may signal something even more important, potentially hinting at the return of a previous version of Supergirl.
New Costumes Signaling New Eras

Supergirl’s costume has always been a way for her to express who she is. Unlike Superman, whose suit has remained largely unchanged, Supergirl frequently updates her look with each new comic series. This reflects her ongoing struggle as an outsider on Earth, still mourning the loss of Krypton while trying to build a new life. Her outfits often show where she is in that process – sometimes leaning towards traditional Kryptonian styles, and other times more closely resembling Earth fashion as she forges her own identity. Her latest costume specifically represents her stepping into a leadership role in the absence of Superman, honoring her Kryptonian heritage with a look that’s uniquely her own.
The new costume hints at exciting developments to come. During the latest issue, Kara discovered a Kryptonian Sun Crystal that reacted strongly with her – the same kind of crystal used to build the Fortress of Solitude. This crystal is packed with information for the last Kryptonians. It’s likely that both the costume and the crystal will be key to bringing back Matrix, a Supergirl from the past.
Matrix originated as a being similar to Supergirl, created from living energy within a small universe. This energy and her memories might be stored in the Crystal, and she could have used Kara’s Supergirl suit as a model for a new body, essentially bringing back a version of Supergirl that hadn’t been seen in years. Matrix hasn’t appeared since she combined with another Supergirl, Linda Danvers, in a 1996 comic book. It’s just a theory, but Supergirl’s recent costume is so striking that it deserves another appearance, and giving it to Matrix would be a great way to reintroduce her as a unique character.
