With Lobo set to appear in the upcoming Supergirl movie in the DC Universe, DC Comics is giving the character a fresh start in the comics. For those unfamiliar, Lobo has remained largely unchanged since his debut decades ago – a tough, hard-drinking alien. He had a short-lived revamp during the New 52, but generally, he’s stayed true to his original, rough-around-the-edges antihero persona. It’s difficult to drastically alter a character built as a parody of extreme antiheroes, and Lobo is no exception.
The DC Universe is entering a fresh, new phase. With the conclusion of the DC K.O.’s Omega Tournament, DC Comics is launching its exciting ‘Next Level’ initiative. This era will focus on development and trying new things, giving opportunities for less prominent heroes to shine. As an example, Lobo is returning with his first solo comic book series in over ten years. Considering his upcoming appearance in the DCU television universe, it’s a fitting time, and before he makes his on-screen debut, the popular anti-hero is making a slight change to his well-known career as a bounty hunter.
Lobo is Now a Reality Star in the DC Universe (Seriously)

The latest Lobo comic is a team effort from Skottie Young, Jorge Corona, Jean-Francois Beaulieu, and Nate Piekos. It kicks off with Lobo doing what he does best – chasing a bounty. He travels through space, stopping at a particularly rough-looking bar called the Chug n’ Slug Space Pub. Lobo is after a guy named Whit Dusty, and after a quick, violent run-in with the bouncer, he heads inside. The pub is packed with people who are all obsessed with a new action movie called Murder Mouth and Fisty Claus.
Antiheroes are hugely popular in space, as shown by the massive success of the movie ‘Murder Mouth.’ However, Lobo’s attempt to watch the film is interrupted when he spots his target, Dusty, at the bar. Just as he’s about to collect the bounty, Lobo learns it’s been canceled. His employer has been bought out by Omni Mega+ Entertainment Corp, the biggest media company in the DC Universe. To make matters worse, Omni now owns all bounty hunting and bondsman businesses, leaving Lobo unemployed.
Lobo goes to Omni headquarters to settle things and meets Mr. Kzzt, who explains he bought the bounty business solely to profit from antiheroes. Kzzt intends to dominate the reality TV world. Lobo is uninterested in anything but getting paid, and vents his annoyance by fighting Kzzt’s security team. Surprisingly, this outburst impresses Kzzt, who offers Lobo a job: starring in a bounty-hunting reality show.
Lobo’s Taking on Bounties and Media Conglomerates

It’s great that DC Comics isn’t drastically altering Lobo’s character – we remember how the last big changes went. Turning him into a reality TV star, though? That’s a brilliant idea! He still gets to do what he’s known for – taking out anyone with a price on their head – and now he’s the star of a popular new show. But what’s most fascinating isn’t just the reality TV angle; it’s that Lobo is caught up in a larger effort by a huge media company to control what we see and hear.
If you’ve read Lobo comics before, you know they often use obvious and sharp satire. The storyline about the Omni Corporation taking over bounty hunting feels very close to real-world events, like Paramount buying Warner Bros Discovery. The character Mr. Kzzt embodies corporate greed – he’s literally made up of screens! Lobo has always been outspoken, and this story doesn’t shy away from criticizing how quickly these big companies are buying up competitors and eliminating competition.
The new Supergirl series featuring Lobo seems to be taking an unexpected, but interesting, turn. He’ll continue his life as a bounty hunter and enjoy a drink or two, but now his actions are driven by making a profit for his employer. This approach is particularly intriguing given the recent changes at DC’s parent company, and many viewers might appreciate the satirical take on our current, highly commercial world.
