Superman is considered the original superhero, appearing in 1938 and essentially creating the entire genre we know today. He’s often seen as the ideal superhero, and has set the standard for all those who followed. Whenever there’s trouble, Superman consistently steps in to defend truth, justice, and hope for a brighter future. For generations, he’s been the central figure of the DC Universe, the recognizable face of the brand, and the hero people rely on in their darkest hours. Despite his importance, it’s worth remembering that Superman hasn’t always existed.
As a huge Superman fan, it’s honestly a little shocking to say, but Superman is gone. Like, really gone! After that massive battle with Darkseid in DC K.O. #5, he just… vanished. It’s so weird seeing Superboy-Prime taking over the main Superman book while Big Blue is MIA. But it’s not like we haven’t been here before. It reminds me a lot of when Superman ‘died’ back in the ‘Death of Superman’ storyline. Except this time, it feels different – the story hints that this isn’t about death, but about him leveling up and coming back, and the way it’s unfolding is eerily similar to what happened before. I’m already looking for clues about his return!
A Hero Who Became More

The fourth issue of DC K.O. ended with a shocking turn: Lex Luthor killed Superman and declared victory over Darkseid. However, Doomsday unexpectedly appeared, revealing he was created to protect the universe from Darkseid. Doomsday used his remaining Alpha Energy – a powerful force of creation – to bring Superman back to life. Superman defeated Luthor and became Earth’s King Omega, then merged with the Heart of Apocalypse, setting the stage for an epic battle. Although Darkseid initially dominated, Superman gained the upper hand by absorbing the energy of the Big Bang. The Heart of Apocalypse encouraged Superman to win and create his ideal universe, but Superman ultimately refused to do so.
Rather than kill Darkseid, Superman used his power to bring together heroes from across all realities. Together, they forced Darkseid back to the Absolute Universe, creating a temporary barrier to protect their own world. Superman refused the title of King Omega, believing that the fate of the universe should be decided by everyone, not just one person. He shared his Alpha Energy with the assembled heroes, then announced he needed to embark on a new mission. He promised to return when it was finished, but his eventual return might resemble his departure – a powerful, universe-altering event. And with that, Superman left the world again.
The Death and Return of Superman, Once Again

The finale of DC K.O. clearly echoes the famous “Death of Superman” storyline, but with a twist. Instead of being the one who kills Superman, Doomsday is a complex character who actually gives his life to revive him. Superman vanishes, but unlike the first time he seemingly died, we know he’ll return. The strongest connection lies in what happens next: just like after Superman’s death, several heroes emerge claiming to be his successor. Eventually, the original Superman comes back to clarify things, mirroring the “Reign of the Supermen” storyline.
The upcoming issues of Superman’s comic books are setting up a storyline called “Reign of the Superboys,” which will bring together Superboys from different eras and locations. This event, and another related one, are both triggered by Superman’s recent death, suggesting a connection between the two. It’s possible Superman used his remaining powers to save his son, Jon Kent, and his adopted son, Boy Thunder, after their difficult experiences. However, it’s more likely that someone is either seeking out or trying to erase Superman’s history now that he’s gone.
It doesn’t matter why the “Reign of the Superboys” storyline is happening, DC clearly intends for it, and the DC K.O. event, to tie into “The Death of Superman.” While the storylines play out in reverse order, they both share a similar pattern: Superman vanishes after battling an unbeatable foe, but will eventually return. However, given all the twists and turns, it’s also possible DC might keep Superman gone for a longer period – perhaps months or even a year – to create a bigger impact when he does come back, using the various Superboys in the meantime.
