DC Studios has pushed back the release of its planned 2026 Batman villain movie. Although a new Batman won’t appear as part of the main DC Universe for several years, DC is still planning to explore Batman-related stories. A movie detailing the origins of the classic villain Clayface is currently scheduled to come out this fall.
The upcoming Clayface movie has been pushed back. Originally planned for September 11th, it will now be released on October 23, 2026, according to Erik Davis of Fandango. This means fans will have to wait about six extra weeks to see the DC horror film.
There wasn’t a stated reason for the change, but the release date originally intended for this film has now been given to another Warner Bros. movie, Practical Magic 2.
The upcoming movie Clayface will be one of the first films in the new DC Universe connected to Batman. It’s based on the story of Matt Hagen, an up-and-coming actor who transforms into the shape-shifting villain Clayface after a terrible accident.
The upcoming horror film, Clayface, features Tom Rhys Harries in the lead role, alongside Naomi Ackie and Max Minghella. Written by horror expert Mike Flanagan and directed by James Watkins (known for Speak No Evil), the movie filmed from August to November 2025 and a trailer is expected to be released soon.
Why Did DC Studios Delay Clayface?
Ever since Clayface was first announced in December 2024, it’s been scheduled for release on September 11, 2026. That’s why it’s a bit surprising to see the film’s official poster and marketing materials appear so close to the release date.
Now that filming has finished and a trailer is expected shortly, this minor change feels confusing to DC fans. However, it could end up being a good decision.
Originally, DC Studios planned to release three movies within about three and a half months: Supergirl in June, Lanterns in the summer, and Clayface in September. This delay creates more space between releases, particularly giving a longer gap between Lanterns and the upcoming Batman villain film.
Moving the release date could also generate more excitement for the Clayface movie. While people were already planning to see the horror-themed superhero film in September, releasing it a week before Halloween gives it a chance to benefit from the spooky season atmosphere in a way it couldn’t before.
It’s almost surprising this wasn’t the plan from the start. Releasing the DC Studios film right when audiences are eager for spooky entertainment – both in theaters and for Halloween – just makes perfect sense.
