DC’s Absolute Universe Is Righting the Wrong of Earth One’s Abrupt Demise

The Earth One graphic novel series from DC Comics didn’t fully realize its potential before it concluded, but DC’s new concept, the Absolute Universe, is making up for that gap. Few intellectual properties are as closely linked to the idea of a multiverse as DC Comics, which houses an expansive multiverse filled with diverse versions of its legendary superheroes and villains. The multiverse created by DC has allowed for countless innovative reinterpretations of characters like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and many others, such as the Earth One graphic novel line from DC. This series presented fresh origin stories for the Trinity (Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman), Green Lantern, and the Teen Titans. Regrettably, the Earth One imprint appeared to conclude with “Batman: Earth One” Vol. 3 in June of 2021.

As a die-hard DC fan, even though the tragic fate of Earth-One left me heartbroken, I can’t deny the importance of the multiverse to DC Comics. The thriving alternative reality of DC’s Absolute Universe is a testament to this fact. Similar to Earth-One, Absolute DC has given birth to fresh interpretations of many of DC’s legendary superheroes, and there’s plenty more room for new characters in Absolute DC. The icing on the cake? Absolute DC seems to be embracing the spirit of Elseworlds continuity that Earth-One initially set out to explore, and it’s showing great promise in reaching the heights that Earth-One might have scaled.

DC Earth One Was an Elseworlds Comic Book Line With Great Potential

In a fresh and captivating approach, the DC Comics series titled “DC Earth One” entered the comic book world by promising unique, standalone stories for DC’s iconic characters, offering different origin tales apart from their main continuity. Although DC has previously produced Elseworlds tales, Earth One offered an enthralling journey into a distinct alternate DC universe with revamped versions of each hero. For instance, Hal Jordan transformed into a space mining astronaut, and General Zod became Superman’s uncle – every Earth One comic brought intriguing alterations to the mythology of its respective character, making them all engaging reads.

It’s unfortunate that DC Earth One struggled due to an inconsistent release schedule, with new books coming out months or even years apart. This made it tough for the series to sustain a steady buzz and enthusiasm because of the wide gaps between new releases. Despite its fantastic storytelling, artwork, and reimagined origins for numerous superheroes and villains, DC Earth One’s seemingly abrupt conclusion is truly regrettable.

DC’s Absolute Universe is Going Even Wilder in Its Character Re-Imaginings

In simpler terms, the Absolute Universe in DC comics shares a closer link to the main storyline compared to DC’s Earth One because it originated from Darkseid’s energy. Initially, both the Absolute Universe and Earth One were created as new universes with fresh origins for all DC characters. However, while Earth One offered reimagined stories, the Absolute Universe is pushing the boundaries of DC even further with its innovative vision.

In this new, transformative universe, Batman trades his cape for a hard hat as an axe-wielding, power-lifting construction worker. Instead of growing up on Themyscira, Wonder Woman experiences her formative years in Hell. Superman becomes a champion for the oppressed, donning an A.I.-enhanced tech suit.

Wally West is now on the run from the Rogues following his acquisition of super-speed after Barry Allen’s apparent demise. Martian Manhunter exists as an extraterrestrial consciousness within human detective John Jones’ mind. The Absolute Universe also introduces a variety of Green Lanterns, both veteran and brand new, adding to its richness.

Each character in the Absolute Universe has been reinvented in a way that sets them apart from any previous versions. Not only does this make for an exhilarating comic book reading experience, but it also fulfills something the universe had never promised before – a complete overhaul.

The Absolute Universe is Becoming the Phenomenon That DC Earth One Could Have Been

Since I first encountered Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman in Absolute DC, it’s been nothing short of extraordinary! This series has truly revolutionized DC Comics and the entire comic book scene, with each issue flying off the shelves and captivating readers consistently. Having already completed a year-long run, new heroes like Green Arrow are now part of the Absolute family, and we’re slowly getting glimpses into the grand plans for the Absolute Universe. In essence, DC Comics is successfully aiming for a second chance at the vision they had for DC Earth One through Absolute Universe, with nothing short of exceptional outcomes so far.

A regular publishing schedule plays a significant role in Absolute DC’s success, similar to Earth One. However, what truly stands out is how Absolute DC amplifies the Elseworlds concept, especially with the upcoming crossover between Batman and Wonder Woman in Absolute Wonder Woman #15. This cross-over promises exciting encounters among heroes. The real draw of Absolute DC isn’t just anticipation for an Absolute Justice League, but also the potential it holds, mirroring what Earth One could have achieved with stronger support from DC Comics.
